I bought the 4th edition (2006) of this book, not as a travel companion, but to help me decide whether to take a trip to California. The hotel prices are more up to date now, and this is one factor which was important to me as one of my aims in reading this book was to assess the cost of a possible trip. I found the introductory sections on Environment, History and Culture really interesting, I think the thoroughness of the background information is one of the areas in which LP excel. I looked at the practicalities - food, transport, etc., and I read the sections on San Francisco and the National Parks. Despite finding the descriptions of the National Parks very tempting, the book has not yet persuaded me that California is the place ... Read More:

I've just spent three months travelling round Sri Lanka with both the Rough Guide and the Lonely Planet guide. I have to say, that the Rough Guide proved, on almost all counts, to be the much better option.

Obviously neither guide is perfect - the Rough Guide is excellent on the South coast, but not so good when you travel further north, and both guides fail to give much useful information (or the correct information!) about how to travel around by public bus. However, the Lonely Planet guide is pretty inaccurate throughout. Many of the maps are wrong, for instance, and it fails to actually give a balanced view of whether place is worth visiting. Even if some people might consider the Rough Guide to be too negative, I found that ... Read More:

Very disappointed with this supposedly updated edition. Hotel reviews were woefully inaccurate and have obviously been done without being visited - on my trip I came across the previous edition which described one hotel as being rundown - the same hotel was described as the best hotel in town in the new edition and it was obvious it hadn't been done up in the intervening period! Restaurant recommendations rarely describe the food on offer and, when they do, seem to focus on pizza or burgers. And I would truly love to know what is meant by a 'cookie cutter' hotel which is how one place is described. Easily the worst LP guidebook I've ever come across - and unsurprisingly a view shared by several other travellers I met. My top tip? Never stay ... Read More:

Books : Australia (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
This book is the de-facto book.
I travelled Oz and Tas on it, as do most other travellers.

If you want a guide book, go get one, this will tell you everything in a concise way - as this is what a traveller needs.

There are many other books out there, rough guides etc, but trust me everyone who is anyone uses lonly planet. They are far from perfect, but it has everything u need in it, prices, phone numbers, how to get around, itineries etc. For the reviwer who said it doesnt have iteneries, did most definatly does - near beginning. but you do have to cross reference each point to other points in the book, there isnt space to repeat stuff!!

You would do well getting this book way before travelling, and planning ... Read More:
