This book is a very informative, enlightening and interesting read.

This book is a pleasure to read. It is easy to follow the author as he travels around the world. He starts explaining briefly about his background in Poland and his desire to `cross the border' and how, as a consequence, he finds himself being sent to India.

Perhaps one of the main attractive qualities of the author is that he is honest; he doesn't say he likes or even enjoys all of the places he travels to. For example, taking his first long-haul trip to India, the reader gets the impression that he really entered at the deep end and found it quite tough.

Later in the book he goes on to discuss in more detail the reasons why people ... Read More:

It was the colourful front cover showing a map of Africa that made me pick up this book in the store.

Ryszard Kapuscinski was a polish journalist who spent long periods of time travelling in Africa, reporting for his paper. This book contains articles from the late 1950's until the 1990's.

He writes about sub-saharan Africa: The lands in the west, the centre and the east of the continent. North Africa and southern Africa are not covered.

He writes about the African concept of time. He writes about their spiritual world. He describes the way they greet each other and about their laughter. He describes how thieves could be deterred by a few feathers strategically arranged above the door. He writes about ancient feuds ... Read More:

This book is not a chronological study of the Iranian revolution in 1978. It is speculative, meditative and quite remote from the events that so shook the world. It would seem that K. was not able to get out and about much at the time and much is filtered through the medium of old photographs and notes that he made in his hotel, whilst the revolutionary gangs prowled the streets. I think the book is excellent on its own terms, as a contemplative statement about revolutions, absolute power and totalitarian dictatorship. It was no surprise that one type of totalitarian state succeeded another in Iran, the Shah was obnoxious and K somehow sensed that what would follow would not be a true political change, rather a change of personnel with business as usual with executions ... This is the very best book to encourage any interest in the former USSR it is a truly truly amazing book. It starts in Pinsk, Poland in an area now called Belarus which was occupied by the Soviets during Ryziard's childhood and he describes the cruel deportation of 200 000 people to Siberia and how his family managed to avoid it, with his mother staying awake all night long to alert the children if necessary to go into hiding, moving and poignant. I nearly cried when he told of the time when his teacher said the sweet shop was closing and they were giving away free sweets. All the children queued all night in the wind and snow to wait for the shop to open only to be given the empty sweet jars - just one each.

In his position as the only foreign correspondent ... Read More:

Written as a series of reminicences by former flunkies of the royal Sellasi household this book has an imaginative format. Haille Sellasi lived and breathed his privilidged life of high status as Emperor of Ethiopia, purportedly decended from Abraham no less. Reading between the lines I do not believe he was inherantly wicked and tried in his own way to rule in the regal style expected of him to the very end of his life. It may seem laughable reading of his daily routine of timetabled fawning and doling out sage advice to his attentive staff but think again - How far away are we in Great Britain from supporting a royal life style based on very similar lines to those primitive Ethiopians? Did the late Queen Mother not lift a finger all her life with an array of simpering brown ... Read More:

This one starts in Central America in 1969,with a description of a war between Honduras and El Salvador ostensiably sparked by a disputed play-off for the 1970 World Cup.Fascinating,as there isn't much about Central and South America in the rest of Kapuscinski's writing,at least that portion of it that has so far been translated into English.
The rest is Africa-Ghana,the Nigerian Civil War and other pointas around the continent. As always, his critical love of Africa and Africans shines through.
A minor quibble.I know this was probably translated by an American, but why not "The Football War"?Nobody outside North America or Australasia would ever refer to the sport as "soccer".I know,I'm nitpicking here. It's a grerat book, read it and enjoy.

This was the first book of Kapuscinski's I ever read(in about 1986)and I've been a huge fan ever since. Not the archetypal war junkie that western media outlets habitually send to Africa,Kapuscinski's humanity and gift for the arresting detail shine out in this book. Two highlights in a fantastic book are:
1-The passage describing roadblock etiquette. How vital it is to know the difference between "camarada"(comrade) and "irmao"(brother).Saying the wrong word at the wrong roadblock means instant death.
2-When he hears a radio broadcast saying that the MPLA are a bunch of communist stooges, lackeys to their Soviet masters, and that any communists would be hunted down.At this point in time,Kapuscinski is,as far as he knows, the only citizen of a socialist country anywhere in Angola.a terrifying ... Not a dig at Mr.K-the material in the book is great-but Penguin didn't mention that it's all in "The Shadow Of The Sun".There's no original material in it at all!!
Buy "Shadow Of The Sun" instead-it's far better as you see the material in this in it's proper context.Indeed, buy anything by Mr.K,but avoid this.
