I have never picked up a professional camera before, so books with aperture and white balance etc went straight over my head. This book is great for someone new to digital photography who just wants to go out and take pictures that look great. The book features allot of the basic equipment you will need to get started and a few prices to give a feel for things. It's nice to finally have a few comparisons of what to expect to pay depending on the quality of equipment. The book gives you the information on how to take different pictures and what to look for if your interested in the theory behind the different camera settings and how the equipment works. Please, don't take any notice of the tripe you will read in these reviews about stupid humour. It is only in a half dozen intro pages and even then, it's not enough to worry about and stop you learning from these wonderful books. Buy this book, buy volume one too and a good highlighter pen, because you will learn an awful lot (unless you are a seasoned pro). The tips are quick, precise and have made my photography much better in the week it has taken me to read (and cover in highlighter!) both volumes. Volume two has a great section on studio work with simple and inexpensive equipment that is worth the cover price alone. Don't listen to the silly moans about his sense of humour, buy these and learn lots!

I have been amateur photographer for years and have long since left my darkroom behind. In recent times my interest has been revived by the new high quality digital pocket camera. In my case a Panasonic TZ3 Having played about with Photoshop I soon found I was getting nowhere fast until that is I purchased Scott Kebly's The Adobe Photoshop CS3 book. I truly love this book; its step by step guide is a dream to use. Full of colour photos to accompany the instruction is great. I used my own photos whilst going following the instructions which truly change the quality of the finished image. If you`re like me, attention span of a newt, then this is the book for you! I`ve got SO many books over the years about Photoshop and whilst i`ll get to about the 2nd chapter i get fed up and move on. Unless, that is, a book comes along that is superbly written and incredibly easy to follow, packed full of useful REAL LIFE information that you will and can ACTUALLY use....this is that book. Its just an awesome piece of writing. Simplicity its its key to success. You just follow the simple instructions, repeat, practice and tadaah!! You`ve got it! Maybe this has just set a standard that other books should follow.....in my eyes it certainly has!

PSE 6 is not that different to PSE5 so expecting the books to be major re-writes is a little naive. I have read and browsed a number of books on PSE6 and they only differ marginally from the previous versions but that reflects the minor upgrade in the software. My advice is do not buy the book for PSE6 if you already have the PSE 5 version. If you do not have any then this will prove an excellent book as so many of the others do.

Like any piece of equipment, I am not interested in how it works (I leave that to the boffins / technically minded), all I want to know is what button to press to get a certain result. In this step by step guide to Photoshop CS2, that's exactly what happens. You don't even have to sit and work out what settings to use to get certain effects, the author (presumably through his own experience) recommends the settings. After months of struggling to discover how to use the the very powerful Photoshop CS2, with this book, I got the results I wanted as quickly as it took me to turn a page. Long live Scott Kelby

I have been using Lightroom for several months now, but felt I was missing out on its full potential. I needed someone who knows what they are talking about to take me through it step-by-step and show me all the features and how to use them to improve workflow efficiency and end product quality. Scott Kelby has done that for me with this book. I happen to like his jokey style, so reading the book and using it with Lightroom was like having a pal who was talking me through it. The book is broken down into relevant sections covering the Lightroom modules, and it is easy to go back and find a particular feature to go over it again if you want to. I like Scott Kelby's books. They are easy to read, well-laid out and clearly illustrated with colour photographs. His updated book on the iPod range is great - full of tips and tricks that I found useful - even as a reasonably experienced user of the products now. Particularly good on hidden gems in the iTunes store; this book is deceptively comprehensive, although one minor complaint is that it doesn't go into much detail on how to move your music library from one computer to another. However - combined with the Rough Guide (reviewed separately) - you'll have a pretty comprehensive guide to the world of iPods and online music. Thoroughly recommended

As the other reviewers have said, there is so much information in this book and it does cover every aspect and provides clear instructions. It will do the job if you want to know about elements 5. But there are a number of irritating faults: 1) The author's humour is silly and childish. This is ok in small doses but when, in many areas, nearly every other line has this silliness, it becomes wearing. Also, when you want to understand how to do something and the meaningful text is perhaps 4 lines, it is annoying to have to read through more than ten lines of silliness to get to the useful text. eg "...an entire chapter devoted to Raw. So why a whole chapter? ........ (2) I needed the extra pages to get my page count up; (3) I really didn't need the page count, but you can't be sure of ... Read More:
