I got this cookbook for Christmas and 1 year later, I've made a fair few of the recipes within the covers. They have been without exception delicious. I also like the writing on French food which I'm not particularly knowledgable on. I find some voyeuristic pleasure in reading what this guy has to say because he drifts into foods that you would never find in a supermarket (see chapter on brains!) and would probably never dream of cooking; but he makes it sound like your missing out on a massive treat!

The main problem i have with the meals i've cooked from 'Roast Chicken' is they always have too much lemon in. My family have always pointed this out to me. It makes the front cover of the book seem slightly ominous looking back, therefore ... Read More:

I have to be honest, I am not normally drawn to this sort of `cookbook', but I am so glad I was and looked inside! A friend described this book as a `grown-up' cookbook and I now understand what she meant!

Within the pastel covers are not the oodles of colour photos that would normally encourage one to flick through, in fact the only illustrations there are, are subtle and simple, and limited to the opening of each new chapter. But, strangely enough, that is all that is required.
Additionally, any book that refers to the great `Elizabeth David`, and her editor, Jill Norman, is sure to find a place on my bookshelf!

I too, was misled by the title into thinking this would be everyday recipes, arranged by the seasons, but it turns out that 'Week in, week out' refers not to the cooking but to the writing of his weekly column in the Independent. Although there are 52 columns there are no headings and no very discernible order (starts with New Year, Christmas still being mentioned on p.67) so you can't easily find a recipe suitable for a particular time of year.

Although some of the recipes are very good, and the methods given are very thorough, this was spoilt for me as an enjoyable read by the sheer tetchiness of the author's tone. As the favourable review by Henrietta Green notes, he is 'dismissive of modern food fads'. Well, he seems to be dismissive of ... Read More:

Simon Hopkinson and Lindsey Bareham have written several individual books between them, but this one has that.....well.....`je ne sais quoi'!
It just beckons one to open the seductive looking black cover and reveal the collection of favourite restaurant dishes from the 50s, 60s and 70s, revisited with nostalgia and a fair bit of pride.

For me the book arrived at a time when I was desperately seeking, dare I say a new `shop-bought', `Marie Rose Sauce', as my favourite had been given an up-to-date `tweak' with red peppercorns! Yuk!
As I sampled the vast array, most were too lemony, too mayonnaisey or simply too bland.......so the answer....well.... good old DIY!

And with the help of the `Prawn Cocktail Years', it is actually incredibly ... Read More:

I first came across Simon Hopkinson via the Independent newspaper's weekend food article during the 1980s, and was attracted to the way he describes both the "how" and the "why" of recipes. For example anyone reading his instructions for making a risotto are left in no doubt that this is a dish requiring attention at all times, and the reasons why that attention is required. Also he attributes his own learning generously, pointing his readers in the direction of other good cooks. Quite apart from all this, his books are a joy to read, especially to anyone from the north of England! Simon Hopkinson is the antithesis of the celebrity chef.

I have spent hours drooling over this book! When it arrived in the post I was wondering what was in the package because the book was a lot bigger and thicker than I had anticipated.

When it comes to cookery books this one is quite something. Most of today's cookery books seem to be just recipe books and assume you know everything about cooking . . . which of course most of us don't, otherwise why would we be buying them.

Back in the 1950s and early 60s every housewife would have started married life with a cookery book showing her all that was needed to cook traditional meals and showing the different techniques in the kitchen, books like the Radiation Cookery Book or the Main Cookery Book (published for use with gas cookers). Fairly basic books but full ... Read More:
