I would definitely recommend this book to a novice astronomer. It explains in simple terms what you're looking at in the sky, and how to find the most infamous star constellations. I discovered a lot of things that I had no idea existed. It even gives advice on what telescope to buy, which is a big help if you're looking to buy a telescope for the first time.

A plain and simple guide to the stars in the sky. A must buy!

As soon as I saw this book and read the reviews I had to buy it, On receiving the book you can tell immediately a lot of hard work and thought has gone into it, the book itself is beautifully put together the front cover has a striking hologram on the front, it's a well executed graphical representation of the Big Bang and is a really nice bonus.

I liked how the book puts forward fairly complicated astronomy and science in an easy and enjoyable way, without the feeling you're being spoken down to.

The book is ideal for a younger audience too as it's layout is striking while at the same time being useful and intuitive, there seems to be a very good reason for everything in this book. The science, the layout, the graphics ... Read More:

Unfortunately this is the only proper textbook for GCSE Astronomy, and its pretty disappointing to say the least.

As a beginner, I find the explanations often unclear and confusing. It takes a while to get used to PM's style of writing, of which, you'll either love or hate.

The diagrams are good, but everything including the photos, is in b & w. The layout could be improved, for example, with subheadings so you don't end up scanning the whole chapter for an explanation.

All in all, a disappointing book and not recommended for beginners.

Mr Moore is certainly an usual character and this comes across strongly in his autobiography.

The book goes through his life, focusing particularly on his involvement in the world of astronomy. He has certainly been prominent (and remains so, even in his old age) in this field and the book explains this and his TV career, well. Although the book is roughly chronological I did find that it ordering was sometime a little mixed-up but this is ironed out by the second half of the book.

I think that some modern readers will disagree with some of his views but one must admire him for at least being frank (one suspects that many people who adhere apparently unthinkingly to politically correct views are in fact moral cowards who in reality hold quite ... Read More:

I'm not that keen on Patrick Moore as a presenter but this book is a marvel of clarity and concise information. The diagrams and sky maps are wonderfully informative and comprehensive. I'm one of those geeky people who appreciate all the minor but fascinating stuff, like the diagram which shows the orbits of transneptunian objects such as Sedna.

I picked this book at random because I wanted a book that would tell me the basics about astronomy without all the technical jargon to confuse things. I was impressed. The only thing wrong with it was the poor standard of editing. There were numerous spelling mistakes and this meant that I had to reread certain passages to make sure I had got the meaning correct. That aside thought, I would definately recommen this book to anyone with an interest in the sky at night.
