I'm not especially interested in military history, neither am I a manager or businessman, but I still found this book very enjoyable. It has the rare appeal of being of its time but at the same time applicable to the present day. Many of the insights feel very contemporary - not simply to the business arena but to any aspect of life. The style is terse and aphoristic, which means that it doesn't really matter that the book is quite short. Even the chapters on terrain tactics are interesting from a historical point of view. I would also recommend a book called the Fall by Steve Taylor for its insights into the origins and history of warfare and social conflict The Fall:the Insanity of the Ego in Human History and the Dawning of a New Era: The ... The translator in this book was Lionel Giles, I have his translation of this, in a more extensive version. The translation I have is most amusing because Lionel Giles enters into discussion of the commentaries and also enters into a critique of the other contemporary (circa 1908) and prior translations. Lionel Giles is bitchy and vituperative about the other European translators (particularly one unfortunate Captain Calthrop), which is most entertaining to read. The Art of War itself is a short book, and Giles' translation is probably as good as we are going to get, so if the book itself is all you need, get this. If you want information and entertainment, purchase a longer version of the Giles translation, it is both enlightening and hugely ... Read More:

The fact that when I purchased this it had a cellophane wrapping so the cover didn't get messed up by others just browsing (and you also couldn't look inside) gives an idea to the quality of this book.

The author doesn't just stick to Sun Tzu's 13 Chapters, he also provides an in-depth introduction on the scholarly arguments that have been raging for many hundreds of years as to when The Art of War was written, did Sun Tzu write it, and did Sun Tzu actually exist.

Full of beautiful illustrations as well as quotes from other recognised army theorists, this is a book that is well worth the full price I paid for it.

This is a book you have to read then read again; and again, and...

On first examination it can appear somewhat trite and obvious but, with each subsequent visit, more and more wisdom shines from the pages. Add James Clavell's poignant observations and you have an amazing combination.

It's also worth noting that two of our most effective English Cricket Captains were students of Sun Tzu, Mike Brearley and Nasser Hussein.

Whatever the competitive situation in which you find yourself, there will be words of clear guidance in this little book to help you.

Quire remarkable.

For Sun Tzu, warfare is above all a question of psychology, before strategy and tactics come into play.

The art of war is the art to deceive: 'Apparent confusion is a product of good order; apparent cowardice, of courage; apparent weakness, of strength'.
Sun Tzu is a master of psychological warfare: sap the morale of your enemy and be cleverer (wisdom, not force alone).
For him, 'supreme excellence is to subdue the enemy without fighting.'

His strategy is based on foreknowledge (spying) in order to know the strength and weaknesses (political, geographical, defensive, offensive) of your enemy. And if you are not strong enough, you should be cleverer through diplomacy.

His tactics are flexibility, gaining the initiative and not fighting ... Read More:

Books : The Art of War by Sun Tzu - Special Edition
...
Sun Tzu's "Art of War" is the first known treatise on how to wage war in a professional manner. This little book was written some 2,500 years ago and has been considered to be the seminal work on warfare by nearly every military expert in the world since it became known to Western Civilization.

Sun Tzu pointed out that war is a terrible thing which should be avoided, if at all possible, but, when unavoidable should be carried out so as to minimize the destruction. He was the first to advocate that war should not be undertaken for trivial reasons and that it should be conducted by professionals who know how to do it right - who understand that no one gains from unnecessary death and destruction.

The minute details of his advice are no more directly applicable to modern ... Read More:
