My mother having pressed me to read this book, I finally got round to it early this year. Thank God I did.

I cannot begin to put into words how much this book touched me. Vera Brittan must be an inspiration to all women; a strong and determined character who, despite losing almost everything to the War, did not give up. Vera Brittan was a young, ambitious girl growing up pre-war with aspirations to go to University (something uncommon for the day.) She succeeded in getting into Oxford to study English. Then the War came crashing into her life, and Vera's brother and friends get called up to fight. She herself finds her place, working as a nurse first in London, then abroad. Vera Brittan lost so much to this horrific War and yet ... Read More:

Vera Brittain is best known as the author of "Testament of Youth", one of the finest memoirs to come out of the First World War. This is her first novel, written in the early 1920's when she was sharing a flat in London with fellow writer Winifred Holtby, the friend who helped her survive the crushing blows she sustained during the war. The novel is a thinly disguised account of their time at Oxford in 1919. Virginia Dennison (an idealised portrait of Vera) and Daphne Lethbridge (a sometimes cruelly caricatured picture of Winifred) meet as students and spend most of the novel at cross-purposes. Their gradual friendship is beautifully described, although some of the incidents of the novel are rather melodramatic. One of the best scenes in the novel- the ... Read More:

Books : Chronicle Of Youth: War Diary, 1913-17
This book takes us through the first world war from a woman's viewpoint, but I feel a man could find it relevant and absorbing too. When I first read it I had never heard of Vera Brittain and did'nt even know that she was the mother of the politician, Shirley Williams.

The diary begins in 1913 when Vera is 19 and enjoying a comfortable and protected lifestyle in Buxton, Derbyshire. Highly intelligent and an emerging feminist, she works hard to win a place at Oxford. The war intrudes abruptly two months before she is due to go up to university.

Over the next three years we follow her compelling story of romance, friendships, being an undergraduate and then nursing the wounded in England and Malta. The romance between Vera and Roland is ... Read More:

Books : Letters from a Lost Generation: First World War Letters of Vera Brittain and Four Friends
The letter writers concerned are four young men, friends from public school who were all to die in the Great War: Roland Leighton, ( 1915) Geoffrey Thurlow, (1917), Victor Richardson (1917) , and Edward Brittain (1918). Their story has been told in Vera Brittain's war time memoir from 1933, `Testament of Youth', and the whole project seems to be a spin-off from the revival of the book's popularity as from the late 1970's: Though 'Testament of Youth' was virtually forgotten by the time of Brittain's death in 1970, it seems that her new generation of admirers can not get enough of her work, as her novels come back into print and diaries are published. The personal papers of four leading characters from `Testament of Youth' are now placed in the public domain.
