Books : A Swarm in May
This is a wonderful book, which one of my children (a cathdral choirester himself) loved. It captures the strange, eccentic world of children and their private languages, and the view they have of the adults around them. It is never patronising and always extremely intelligent and interesting, while having a stong and convincing story. It's a lot better than Harry Potter! - but has much of the same appeal, without the magic.

Books : The Hob Stories
Pull up a chair, tuck up the kids, cuddle up by the fire with hot chocolate and butterfly buns! This is a timeless classic collection of stories about Hob the hobgoblin and the family he lives with (although they don't always realise he is there!) This is a perfect book to share with your children; funny, sad, a little eerie in places, and with hauntingly atmospheric illustrations. Reading this as a family makes story time a real event.

When I was a child, nothing irritated me so much as an adult recommending a book by telling me how much they enjoyed it as a child! But I can't resist recommending this one; I first read it about 30 years ago and remembered it ever since. Coming across my old copy packed away in a box, I re-read it, expecting to be slightly let down - but I was pleased to find all the ingredients that had endeared it to me in the first place: time-travel, magic, history, myth and legend, realistic setting and characters.... the list goes on. And more than that, I found that this was a book which had helped form my reading preferences ever since I first read it! Here's one I think everybody should have read.
