This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps. We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. We are planning a fly-drive trip to the USA and we have been looking for information/things to do in places.We initially looked at the Foders books but then stumbled across this book. What a fantastic informative book, the only problem with having this book is we need to book a longer holiday !!! It is excellent value for money and a must have for fly-drive touring of the USA.

Amazon have linked this review to the 2008 Edition as well as the 2004 one, so I am expanding the review to include both Editions. Don't buy anything except the most up to date edition. 2008 Edition (Village with painted houses on cover) Review. Two editions later my review title from 2004 still works pretty well: This is the best laid out Guidebook going, with Lonely Planet's trademark plans of towns, villages and popular sites with all the places of interest, accommodations , bars etc show. There are excellent contents pages at the front to take you to the place in Ireland you want to get to and a good index at the back. There are short Irish history, culture etc sections to give you a feel for the country at ... Read More:

..instead of having to pay through the nose for a copy in a Sienese bookshop. As ever, LP guides have the feeling of being written by someone who's actually been there, and the advice on San Gimignano (get there early or go in Winter) would have been worth it alone. This is an excellent guide, especially if - like us - you were roaming over both regions during your holiday. Highly recommended

Lonely Planet - great for maps and local transport but thats about all! As any experienced traveller will tell you, the minute any restaurant, cafe or hotel gets it name in LP then its prices will double and the standards will half! I also agree with some of the other comments here, why do they try so hard to be cool and why do they tell us what we should and shouldnt do? An OK book but now and then leave it in your backpack and be adventurous.

I bought this book for my two boys who are six and seven years old, it looked great to me. Unfortunately after reading a few of the stories my boys said the book was just plain boring! Maybe it would be better suited for girls??? there are so many lovely books out there and I liked the idea of having lots of different stories all in one book, but it didn't work this time !!!
