Saw this recommended on Richard & Judy last week, bought it on Thursday & finished it last night - absolutely loved it.

Off to find more from this author, really like his east to read writing style.

Any potential readers debating whether or not to go for it - Do - it's a great read and a real page turner.

I am amazed that Richard & Judy chose this novel for their Summer Read collection. It is certainly not a book to read while relaxing by the pool. I enjoyed the reading of this as the style of writing is so pristine and fresh. It is also didactic and reveals the narrow minded prejudices of the not so distant past in a very powerful and clever way. It reminded me of Catcher in the Rye, one of my favourites. However, I just found the content so unedifying: self-harm, abuse, incestuous relationships, apathy, coldness etc, etc, etc. It was compulsive reading though as I had to find there was resolution and hope. If that hadn't come, I might just have put the book immediately in the bin. It has certainly made me think though and I am very moved ... Read More:

I am not surprised at the amount of high praise for this book as it has a storyline that keeps you turning the page. It is noted that a few previous reviewers may have guessed at a plot twist or two but you still have to read on to find out why the events happened so this is largely irrelevant. There is atmosphere that is created which draws you into the world created by the author and allows you to connect with the subjects of the story and the timeframes that they are captured in. Another enjoyable bestselling novel by Kate Morton.

Once I picked this book up I could not put it down.Memories came spinning back to this fifties boy.I came up through most of these times and so I could relate to this modern history.Andrew Marr has handled the political side very well in this book and has managed to keep his personal views from overspilling into factual happeninings. One thing it did for me was to show that our country is run by legalised liars with huge built in egos , no matter what party or Prime Minister has run Britain. How many times has Britain survived bankruptcy from the failings of all these politicians who treat their position as a career and right with greed being the reward? Why do we have to wait until something is history before we see the true failings and stories.Read this book ... Read More:

You have questions, of course... So, should I read this book, "The Book Thief"? Is it any good? Is it yet another depressing book about Nazis and Jews and the Second World War? What is this all about - Death as the narrator - sounds contrived...

I had seen this book, gracing the shelves in bookshops and, to be honest, was attracted by the cover but not sure that I wanted to read another novel about the horrors of the Holocaust. I went with my first instinct - the cover felt right...

This book is not a harrowing hike through the charnel houses of 1940's Europe. It is a simple tale of the trivia which make up human lives. It is moving and rich and captures the simplicity of childhood, the joy of friendship and the love of family in a way both ... Read More:

"Devil May Care" is a lightweight, enjoyable pot boiler that is highly reminiscent of the Ian Fleming novels and also the Sean Connery 007 movies. I definitely felt that Sebastian Faulks nailed Fleming's writing style. Unfortunately he has been less successful in constructing a compelling plot and characters.

I very much enjoyed the first half the book which vividly recreates the late 60s. Bond's initial confrontation with the villain is over a game of tennis that reads more like a duel and has all the tension of Casino Royale. The love interest, Scarlett, also makes a dramatic entry. However the second half of the book rapidly loses momentum and pace and the overly-complicated plot gets bogged down with lengthy explanations and the introduction of characters ... Read More:

I was lying on the beach last week at Lyme Regis reading Julia Gregson's East of the Sun. Total bliss.
I strongly recomend it for a summer escape.

I found this novel extremely disappointing on a number of levels - and I have spoken to friends who have read it and feel the same.

A Gothic novel set mainly in 1820s London could and should have been dark and sinister. The themes of Bradley's novel are indeed dark and sinister but the whole thing fails to hang together and becomes rather disjointed.

For a start Bradley fails to conjure up the smells and feel of 19th century London in the way that Dickens does. Yes he is historically correct but there's just something missing all the time.

The main character's descent from assistant to an anatomist to body stealer, opium addict and murderer should have been dramatic and tense, but isn't. Characters come and go and the blurb on the back cover is misleading. ... Read More:

For me this was a great recommendation from Richard and Judy (although I actually bought it after reading the reviews here on Amazon (after much mulling over in various bookshops!)).

Pippa was a character I warmed to and had some sympathy for. At the age of 50 she was living in an older person's gated community which made her feel like she was losing her mind and made her have some interesting episodes.

In terms of written style, I found it accessible and flowed well. The flip back to the past worked for me. Some reviewers refer to the sexual content and whilst the character was allowed to explore her sexuality I felt it wasn't written in a particularly graphic way.

Overall it was a great story and great book and it was a fast read. I was thoroughly immersed. ... Read More:
