Books : Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire
Although 'Georgiana' is competently written and well-researched, I am frankly amazed that it has achieved such massive success and popularity since its first publication ten years ago. As other reviewers have pointed out, it perhaps fulfills a useful purpose in putting women back in the 'front-line' of the eighteenth-century political scene but, speaking for myself, I found the exhaustive discussion of the ups-and-downs of the Whigs and Tories tedious in the extreme and an almost total turn-off. This was doubly disappointing, since the rave reviews had led me to expect so much more.

Strangely enough, the most engaging part of the book was the introduction, in which the author writes with real verve and enthusiasm of how she was ... Read More:

Animal lovers may be a little upset by RLS's early treatment of Modestine... however he does shed a tear for her on parting.

The book is a tale of walking which RLS truly enjoys, good evocation of France and the French in a time before tourism. A short enjoyable read.

Not only did I listen raptly all the way to and from work for a fortnight, but I've ended up understanding how we've got to where we are. I know I'll listen to these tapes again and again and would recommend them to anyone. History comes to life - and how entertaining and informative it is. Superb.

Books : A Night to Remember (BBC Radio Collection)
This is a classic book on the sinking of the Titanic and the first book I ever read on the subject. It should be understood before reading this book that our collective understanding of the Titanic disaster has moved on since the time "A Night to Remember" was first published in 1956. For example, upon discovering the wreck of the Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic in 1985 it was clear that the Titanic had indeed broken in half and rested upon the sea bed in two halves. As anybody who has seen the 1958 film "A Night To Remember"; will realise this book presents the ship as sinking whole, which was not the case. But this is not to say that this book does not have a lot of outstanding information to impart to the interested reader. The book considers ... Read More:

6.The Downing Street Years by: Margaret Thatcher

Books : The Downing Street Years
This book is one of the most interesting political autobiographies I have read (and I've read many of them). I must confess that interest was intensified due to the fact that I worked in the House of Commons during her tenure in office, and indeed worked during the 1987 General Election for two Conservative Members of Parliament (David Amess of Basildon and David Evennett of Erith & Crayford--yes, I know, you've likely never heard of either of them).

This is actually the first volume of Margaret Thatcher's books to be published; the prequel is 'The Path to Power' and there is a follow-up, 'The Collected Speeches', but for those interested, 'The Downing Street Years' is the book to have.

It begins with the 1979 General Election, and ... Read More:

...Dad's Army, or how sweet rationing drove a teacher to steal from his pupils, or what happened when an elephant got loose in the blackout, the full foul facts about life on the home front are laid out before your ears. It's packed with quizzes, sketches and jokes, as well as mini-dramas and real life re-enactments - telling you the kind of foul facts which just aren't available from a classroom education! This book is like most of the other Horrible Histories which have very practical timeline which are terrific! Rating: 7/ 10.

This History of Britain vol. 1 is by no means exhaustive but that's not what it intends nor claims to be. Instead, you get an engaging page-turner, as addictive as the best detective or adventure novel, told by an expert in the matter and a consummate story-teller to boot. I bought this after having seen the BBC series but, trust you me, the book is even better!

Books : The History of Opera (Non Fiction)
On four cassettes, the history of opera is recounted in a fairly entertaining way. The plus points are definitely the many nice anecdotes of the life and times of various composers. The best part is a 30 sec. recording from the early 20th century of a castrato voice singing Ave Maria. On the other hand, the very short excerpts of the opera pieces are very frustrating. In addition, the sung pieces are not really commented upon as far as interpretation and orchestration is concerned. Much of this history depends on the history of recorded music. Also, I found that disproportionate coverage was given to the 19th century giants, leaving out much of the lesser known, but maybe more interesting earlier works in the Baroque period, but also those by Mozart, who is a little glossed over. ...
