I first read this when I was 12 in the early '70's, and snapped this up as soon as I saw it has been re-printed.

Gibson started right at the beginning of the war in Bombers, did a stint in nightfighters (he was due for rest, but wouldn't accept the genuine break from the war that his superiors wanted him to have), then went back to Bombers through to his being killed in a raid over Germany after he returned to front line duty post Dambusters' raids.

This autobiographical book chronicles the aerial bombing campaign, and, as well as recording Gibson's personal experiences, the people he knew, and some of the scrapes that they got up to on base, charts the developing sophistication of RAF Bomber Command's tactics and aircraft. ... Read More:

While reading the book I repeatedly wondered how the author could emerge as a whole person. As the book explains the memories haunted him for years and only found release after completing the book.

The honesty is amazing, its clarity unusual. The details are numerous, but always important and add to our understanding of what it was really like.

Sobering, impressive, well-written, ever-relevant. Thoroughly recommended.

7.Cockleshell Heroes (Pan Grand Strategy) by: C.E.Lucas Phillips

Books : Cockleshell Heroes (Pan Grand Strategy)
The story of the cockleshell heros written by CE Lucas Phillips is another gem following on from his 'Greatest Raid of All' story on the raid on the docks at St Nazaire. This story about a raid on the harbour at Bordeaux by members of the Royal Marines in their small two man canoes is another classic.

The synopsis on the training and men involved gives us a great insight into how relatively ordinary off the street guys are moulded into a highly effective assault team that carries out one of the most daring raids of the war. The succesful raid achieves its objectives with the minimal of resources and manpower.

The determination and bravery of the team is beyond words, achieving their goals whilst overcoming bad weather and an ... Read More:

I was surprised to recently come across this book in Waterstones (more expensive than on Amazon!) and bought this book on a whim. My late father was a young stoker on HMS Rodney - joining in 1943 - after Bismark - but in time for D-Day and the Russian convoys. He left the ship following Victory in Europe and was in Vancouver ready to join the Pacific fleet when the war ended.

This is a wonderful history - accessible for non-specialists like myself. Following a brief introduction to the Admiral himself and the first ships that subsequently bore his name, the book focuses on the battleship laid down in the 1920s and finally broken up in 1948.

The strange shape of the Rodney and her sister ship Nelson resulted from the constraints ... Read More:

Mention any of history's greatest conflicts and certain names spring readily to mind either because they were great commanders or great heroes. Generally speaking, Robert Hichens is not one of those names - though it should be!

The Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) is the RN equivalent of the Territorial Army and provides a platform for those who are not fully employed by HM Forces to undertake their military training and weekends and other convenient times. During WW2, of course, these reservists were called up for full time duty. Robert Hichens was just one such person.

Commencing his wartime career in minesweepers, he earned his first DSC by twice going ashore at Dunkirk to help organise the evacuation. In October 1940 he transferred ... Read More:

In the last 50 years I've read countless books which profess to tell the "Untold Story" of this or that battle. This book is no different. Certainly, it looks at the battle from a different perpective from the two dozen-or-so other books I've have on the battle, but it does not tell me anything new.The Japanese still lost 4 carriers & the position of the various aircraft on their carriers did not alter the outcome. As for telling the Japanese side of story.....Messrs Fuchida & Okumiya did that very sucessfully in 1957.Try Peter C Smith's 1976 version for a comprehensive account of the battle.
