A great read that fills in the blanks left by the Band of brothers book and tv series.
Political correctness takes a back seat and Bill and Babe say it as it was.
I felt that more could have been detailed about the different firefights which occured (especially on the Normandy drop.)
Bill touches on this very lightly by saying he was named Wild Bill after killing many Germans on D Day.

However, he doesn't go into any more detail other than admitting that he 'executed' two SS soldiers (on D Day) who had surrendered to him with a bullet to the back of their heads. (He then goes on to say that he has no regrets and feels no pain or sorrow fot killing them. (How many people would admit that in their book ?)

It is so amazing of what not only Major Winters has done but the whole Battalion. I've read Stephen E Ambrose's Band of Brothers and have also got the DVD. Whether I'm watching the DVD or reading the book, if feels as though I'm there.

As Dick Winters says, if it wasn't for Captain Sobel being so nasty the lads wouldn't have bonded as well as they did.

Dick Winters is an inspiration.

This book, along with Geoff Wellum's First Light and Jim Goodson's Tumult in the Clouds really stands head and shoulders above the rest of the bunch and will have you hooked from start to finish.

Just one thing I would really like to know more about is the claim that Rommel was killed in the attack on his staff car in Normandy in July 44 by a pair of Spitfires - one Canadian and one Kiwi pilot, and not forced to commit suicide later, after being implicated in the plot to asassinate Hitler.

Can anyone shed any more light on this?

It is excellent to see this exceptional book published at a very reasonable price in paperback. The hardback cost has kept the analysis to too small a circle of experts. This book is not a narrative history of the role of 21st Army Group in North-West Europe but provides a convincing analytical account of the factors that both shaped the army and determined how it operated in action. Most importantly Stephen Hart demonstrates how the Army Group fitted within the large picture of the Allies joint and combined campaign to achieve success.

These 2 volumes on the hitler youth panzer division, are not for the faint of heart.
The detail and indepth study of the fighting and division composition
is staggering. The narrative focus's on every, single action undertaken by elements of the 12th SS pz. div.
Usually following individual abteilung, the author frequently goes down to platoon and even squad level.
Not only reporting from the German perspective, the allied point of view is studied as well.
Having been a student of the second world war since I was a teenager,
I can state that there aren't many divisional historys that are so
thorough as this study of the 12th SS.
Approach with caution if you are a casual reader! You've been warned.

General bradley's memoirs are so modest and self-effacing that at times it is easy to forget the awesome responsibilities that he carried. he is very clear eyed as to what is really going on around him but his actions always seem to be devoid of ego and grand standing. There appeared to be an awful lot of that going on around him and perhaps he was determined not to allow himself to follow that path himself.

A great and good man and perhaps the most under rated of the war?

Stephen Ambrose presents an account of an American paratrooper company in the Second World War. Solely focusing on Easy from beginning to end allows you to really get to know individual members how they lived and as another reviewer said gives you a real insight of stepping out into battle from beginning to end.

My first criticism of the book would be the contribution; it seems those who contributed get put forward in a hero like manner with others who sadly could not contribute sometimes getting portrayed in a very bad light at times. There are times Ambrose goes over board with praise such as Winters quipped this, Winters commanded that and everybody loved Winters. Don't get me wrong I'm not doubting what he did but there are few times in the book ... Read More:
