A travelogue with a difference, or at least a fridge.

Or 'My self absorbed travels around various pubs in Ireland whilst trying to get my leg over'.

Hawks shows virtually no interest in the country he is visiting (he leaves the 'deeply spiritual' place he feels 'honoured' to be visiting to go to the pub (surprise) to watch a football match. (The photo's included in the book are of the fridge, cars and pubs, there is 1 - yes one, photo of some scenery)

His attitude is 'me, me, me' all the the way throuh, which to be honest might not be so bad if Hawks were a pleasant companion but unfortuantley he comes accross as an uninformed, patronising, buffoon. His 'jokes' are painfull (especially towards the end ... Read More:

I RECKON I know a fair amount about Ireland but even I found some little gems in this very entertaining book.
Dracula may have been an Irishman and Glenveagh castle was the site of the world's largest outdoor swimming pool (they heated the lough with steam pipes) ... apparently.
As well as being choc-a-bloc with quirky facts, historical and architectural information, the book's organisation - broken down by county - makes it easy to find stuff relevant to where you live or travel.
It's this structure which gives 'I Never Knew...' the edge over the equally entertaining and probably more odd 'The Irish Companion'(ed) Brendan Nolan. The latter is a great read but you just have to digest it in the order it is served.

The Synopsis is a fair description: "Region by region the Time Team select the most interesting and important sites..."
But what are these sites. How many do they describe in detail. Allow me to explain:
In the book, Britain and Ireland is divided into 15 regions; 10 for England, Wales is one, Scotland in 2, and Ireland in 2. Then 2-4 sites are described in detail for each region, a total of 51 for the book, with two and occasionally four pages for each entry. Then in each region another 15 or so sites are very briefly described, with brief directions on how to drive to each, a total of 225 for the book. The contents page unfortunately does not list the 51 detailed sites so..
The Regions and the sites described in detail are: ... Read More:

Lovely to own, interesting to read, this book is also useful as the definitive guide to the most impressive historic buildings and sites in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. This is the latest revision of a classic bestselling book.

British and Irish castles are fascinating and romantic places to visit. Whether they're ruins, restored heritage sites or still occupied, they evoke times past, the scenes of historical events that shaped our countries and our people - battles, sieges, executions, negotiations, kidnappings and betrayals. Grim and compelling history written in stone.

The vast majority of the castles were constructed as a result of the Norman invasion and are generally characterised by the motte and bailey. While ... Read More:

I bought this for my Irish father who now lives in England. He visits Ireland regularly and knows some of the pubs in this book. Would make a great present for anyone with Irish roots or also if you're planning on going on holiday there it would be a handy guide of places to stop off at for a pint! A lovely freeze frame of Irish pubs.

It's good to see the Rough Guide team updating their Ireland guide less than two years after the last edition.

The Rough Guide to Ireland got the basics right a long time ago. This has always been an in depth guide that gave the traveller the background to the country and gave detailed enough guided tours round the main sites to make buying extra little guides of them unnecessary. It has slowly improved its format from Edition to Edition. The layout is clear and easy on the eye. There are a good number of maps of main towns and sites with the information you need on them. The book is thoroughly web friendly with internet addresses for everything.

The Guide starts with a `Colour Section' with pictures of `33 things not to miss'. It ... Read More:
