Well, that's how we call it in our department as we always go back into this textbook whenever we need some guidance in our studies. It is the most useful textbook next to the Penguin Dictionary of IR. Recommended buy for all International Relations students out there.

I reckon this book is excellent: it contains lucid intellectual writing and covers exactly the right areas.

By wary that I may like so much, since no book on Politics can be without bias, because it's views (or at least it's perspectives on the debate) are similar to my own - and YMMV!

Other reviews say it's ideal for academic study - and it is. But in my case this book was the cause of me doing a formal course, not the result of it - and I think that says a lot =:-)

It's eminently readable - and I expect to be referring to it for a long time to come!

In conclusion, a high quality book, both in its construction and the writing within.

This book is fantastic. When most text books are complex, this puts it in easy words so you can understand it. However it is also good because it isn't to simple so that way the language used can be used in an essay and still look good. This perfectly explains how government, parties, voting patterns and more and how each works in various countries.

Up front I should note that I am a layman reader in this subject matter, I have no background or education in Politics. I purchased this book as a result of a long held frustration with my inability to accurately describe my belief system. Having now read this I now feel fully kitted up to accurately and concisely describe my own ideology, and those of people around me. Furthermore, it has a level of insight which has allowed me to begin to understand the thought process / motivation of those around me who believe differently to myself. I cannot recommend the contents enough. In terms of presentation, the book is broken down by ideology, working in roughly chronological order (from the early ideologies such as Liberalism, through to the modern beliefs ... Read More:

This is probably the best introduction available, being lucid and succinct, it also takes just the right approach to the subject for the beginner. Instead of a chapter by chapter guide to the main thinkers or theories, Wolff cleverly structures the book in such a way that the student is gently coaxed into exploring the fundamental questions of political philosophy for himself. The author notes at the beginning that it is sometimes said that 'who gets what?' and 'who says so?' are the only two questions of importance in the subject. Whilst denying this to be entirely the case, Wolff puts these questions firmly into intial context by asking why we need the state at all and then proceeds to ask if we do need the state, who indeed should govern it? He then ... Read More:

i have found this book to be very poor. it fails to focus in on what is required. British Politics in Focus, Roy Bentley is the best!

The NBP offers a concise introduction to British Politics, which can be used at A Level and undergraduate level. Packed with facts, it has an interesting dual usage - it keeps students awake with interest by day, and puts the tired undergrad to sleep at night. Recommended.

I completely agree with the sentiments already expressed, I found this to be really a good book on the European Union. I would recommend this as it gives you a solid base of understanding of what has gone on, is going on and will continue to go on in the EU. The history, the policies, the institutions, the theories and contemporary debates are all addressed, for the most part in a very clear and concise manner.

As a European Studies undergraduate I have found this to have been an invaluable resource in my second year of study especially. However, I will issue a caveat in my praise, in saying that if you are interested in very specific issues, I would suggest that you find other books that deal with them in greater detail. For this is a more general book, ... Read More:

The Oxford Concise Political Dictionary is a must have for all those with even the slightest bit of interest in Politics. Having been designed for the use by Undergraduates and those in Politics it has almost everything you could desire in terms of Poltical Jargon and Terminology. I ordered it for my A-Level and it has proved to be an extensive help allowing me to have the extra bit more knowledge than the other books provides and giving me access to the grades that i thought impossible. It provides different ideologies views on the different subjects of politics and even has an appendix at the back full of the Political leaders of Russia, U.K., India, China, NATO and many other countries. This Dictionary with all of it's 1,700 entries has provided me and can provide ... Read More:
