This book "... is an ideal reference source for learners and users of Slovene at every level: independent learners, university and college students, and professional linguists." That's what it says on the back cover. Slovene in unlikely to be a language you will try to learn on a whim, but if you have a love for the country, as I do, then you may wish to develop you Slovene skills. But if you are an independent learner, you will find this book certainly comprehensive, and MOST certainly difficult. I advise you use it in tandem with something much more accessible. Of all the language courses produced by Routledge, this one is probably one of the least helpful. This is all the more unfortunate as there are no other courses in Slovene available. Routledge has published some excellent Colloquial courses on Slavic languages, such as Colloquial Czech, Colloquial Russian and Colloquial Ukrainian. Unfortunately, all the Colloquial courses from the former Yugoslavia leave much to be asked for. Colloquial Slovene, Colloquial Croatian and Colloquial Serbian are all below the usual "Colloquial-standard". For a total beginner looking for a phrasebook, this course might be of some use. The only decent English-Slovene/Slovene-English Dictioanry I have been able to find... it has the obvious limited appeal of any Foreign Language Dictionary. But if you, like I, have an interest in Slovenia, you will find this does exactly what you would expect. It's a "standard" size, with a "standard" vocabulary, and gets 4 stars, only 'cos you could always have a BIGGER dictionary!

Lets face it, Slovenian is not a simple language and no amount of good presentation will alter the fact that it is one of the very hardest European languages. However if you are determined (and you will need too be) to discover the romantic joys of 'duality' (singular, plural and dual..great for lovers..) then this is a good a place to start as any. Clearly laid out, as simply exlained as humanly possible and with enjoyable if unfussy exercises, this an excellent book and in a size that makes it good to carry around. Go for it! Good luck though... all of Mr Albretti's efforts cannot disguise the fact that Slovene is one serious language! Stephen Done
