A small volume that provides a snapshot of personal viewpoints of the battle. Slightly limited in the view from the French side, and also there is no way of knowing when the recollections were comitted to paper by the individuals concerned, but a fascinating look at the small section of the event as seen by a disparate group of individuals present at the battle. An adult version of the "My Story" type of books that bring historical events to life for teenaged readers, this book also has the added benefit of a list of sources and references. Worth a place in any collection of books on the Battle or of the period.

I wondered whether this book would be worth the money. If you are considering buying it, then don't wait any longer. I have had a great deal of pleasure reading this as a reference book, dipping into the book as and when I have had the time. There are gems of information on nearly every page and it is so plainly written - scholarly but very accessible. There is enough here to satisfy a variety of tastes - everything from the life of a sailor to how the ships were built. Excellent

I wondered whether this book would be worth the money. If you are considering buying it, then don't wait any longer. im studying Napoleon for Alevel and although the book is good its not a quick read in the slighest and you have to search for infomation xxx

Weller's enthusiasm for his subject come over. His book is a good read. However, Weller is no historian and that is obvious from the way he uncritically accepts so many of the myths of this campaign, presenting them as fact. This book is not recommended to the beginner and sorting the fact from fiction is difficult.

Actually titled: 1809, ESSLING the first defeat?. I have not been able to see nº1, nº2 is about WWII 1944... and nº4 Fontenoy... I thought it was a pure Napoleonic series... poor marketing AGAIN!. In my humble point of view at Aspern-Essling the French were trashed around and the Austrians failed to convert a victory into a success because of the steadfastness and pluck of Napoleon's soldiers (which refused to be beaten!... even with odds of two to one or more...). I also think, Histoire&Collections has wisely (in the present nearly recession times...) decided to launch a cheaper version (à la OSPREY... in fact nearly half the price of a CAMPAIGN volume...) of books about a battle. Highly informative and entertaining account of the personal experiences of an ordinary soldier of the peninsular wars. A rare personal account of the lower ranks due to a lack of literacy at that time.

This book, whilst an entertaining read, suffers from too many similarities as Grehan's 2004 work on the Lines of Torres Vedras. This should come as no surprise given the trisection of Wellington, Massena and the Lines during 1810 - 11. Buttery's work is differentiated on two scores; by a concise personal and military life of Massena (who was a shadow to me previously) and an indepth analysis of the battle of Fuentes de Onoro (my favourite set piece of the Peninsular War). Also there is an illuminating section at the end dealing with a visit to the historical sites of interest something I've attempted in the past to varying degrees of success. Overall, this work is a value for money micro analysis of an interesting period of the war. P.S. a tip for Mr Buttery, ... Read More:
