In Nigeria, devastated by civil war in the 1960s, we see the birth of the state of Biafra and relearn quite a bit of history. It is through the eyes of three different characters, whose personal tales intertwine, that history blends with their difficult paths:

Ugwu, a houseboy for eccentric university lecturer Odenigbo. Olanna, whose parents raise her and twin sister Kainene in the most privileged of backgrounds in Lagos; she leaves everything behind to follow Odenigbo as they are very much in love. Richard, a timid British national charmed by the Igbo culture and enthralled by Kainene, whose personality is an enigma for everyone. Obviously many other characters rotate all around and as we become acquainted with each of them, ... Read More:

My sister recommended Purple Hibiscus to me sometime last year. However, I was reluctant to read the book because I was not sure that it could live up to Half a Yellow Sun, Adichie's other book. In hindsight, I was right.

The novel is narrated by Kambili Achike, the fifteen-year old daughter of a wealthy Nigerian businessman. The book begins with a description of her family life: Her wealthy father, Eugene Achike, whom she called Papa, had made good in life. He had numerous factories and a newspaper, which took an uncompromising stand on the corruption of the ruling elite. To cap it all, he was a philanthropist par excellence, supporting many causes.

Beneath the respectable veneer, however, all is not well. Her father, supporter ... Read More:

This book really surprised me. I read it after I'd read an article about the author in a newspaper, not really thinking it was my thing, but it was! I have no idea how much of the story (fact or fiction) was lost in translation to english, but what you get is interesting, insightful, full of emotion (no drivel though!!), undoubtedly bias and makes you think about the events of war in far more depth then you have probably ever done before. I would give the second part of the book 5/5, but found the first part not quite as engaging, nontheless it is an absolute must read and I'm sure its one of those books that I will pick up and find something new in again and again.

I have read this book a number of times, and can quite happily pick it up and read a single page purely for the pure majesty of the language.

Martin Amis, son of Kingsley Amis and a stylist like Nabokov, has a true love of this book and desribed it, inter alia, as "pure sensual pleasure". A feat of genius, made more staggering by the fact that it was written in Nabokov's second language.

I challenge anyone with a love of the English language and a heart to read this book and ever forget it.

Like the rest of the books written by this author, this is impossible to put down.

Jasmin, her sister and best friend all become involved with a celebrity version of Pride and Prejudice, and the roles they are allocated fit their lives almost impossibly well. If you know the story of Pride and Prejudice then it is rather predictable, but the writing and quick rhythm of the book still leave you giggling along.

An excellent read, though you may want to buy all of melissa's novel for a holiday as you'll get through them so quickly!

I absolutely loathed this piece of over-rated mindless claptrap.
I can't believe what the other reviewers have written. Wake up people!

For as long as I can remember I have resisted reading Lolita. But because it is so often referred to as a "classic" I felt in the end I should put aside my prejudices and tackle it.

In many ways it is as I expected it to be. It is not a comfortable read and the unreliable narrator continually beguiles and tricks us. Humbert claims to love Lolita deeply but at the same time reveals the damage he is doing to her. The narrative is made even more intriguing by its attitude to Lolita - neither "innocent" nor "pure". Nabokov's language is superb - he revels in word play and the book is filled with literary allusions. The road trip across America is brilliantly seen through an outsider's critical eye.

I can see how Lolita has enthralled and irritated so many readers. ... Read More:

I've read all of Nathan's novels except 'The Learning Curve' and found 'The Waitress' as enjoyable as 'Acting Up' and 'The Nanny'. It's romantic and funny and it gives me the impression that Nathan must have been a great observer of people - her characters feel pretty realistic. The novel is deliciously long too, so a lot of material for escapism there. :)

10.A House for Mr.Biswas by: V.S. Naipaul

I never understood why it says this is a `comic' masterpiece on the cover. It's true that A House for Mr Biswas is often funny and always biting, but as a novel this is tragic and grindingly dark stuff. Even the happy ending (given away at the beginning of the book; I'm not spoiling anything for you here), only is a happy end of sorts. Perhaps it is the inexhaustible undercurrent of cheerfulness amid the squalor that makes this so readable, and on the surface a `comic' work.

The novel describes the life of Mohun Biswas, the son of poor peasants of Indian descent in Trinidad, and his long trajectory from the sugarcane worker's hut to a still precarious position as dispatch writer for one of the capital's newspapers. Most of it is concerned with his struggle to escape from his very closed, self ... Read More:
