Whatever controversies arise from Rushdie one cannot but marvel at the depths of his imagination. Midnight's Children whilst containing some of the most beautiful language and imagery is no easy read. As with most Rushdie novels we venture into the world of magic realism and we witness the life of a child born on the stroke of midnight hour when Nehru announces the "tryst with dynasty". Born with special powers Saleem is witness through the whirlwind of events that make up India's first thirty years and we see his attempted interfering. Again with Rushdie's novels we're unable to sympathise with any of the characters but nevertheless the strength of the writing keeps us plodding through.

Having read and enjoyed many of the finest authors of the 19th & 20th century (including many Indian authors) I felt I had to explore Rushdie. What a mistake - pretentious, self-indulgent claptrap.

Salman Rushdie, unfortunately still seen by many as the scandal writer of "The Satanic Verses" only, has with his new book given us readers again a magnificent novel. "The Enchantress of Florence" is a beautiful and opulent reading feast. Considering that one of the books characters is Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527), the main time of this novel is the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th century. A novel, which skilfully plays with the idea of "1001 Nights and Scheherazade", giving the story-telling role to a young european traveller, yellow haired, calling himself the "Mogor dell'Amore" and claiming to be the child of the lost Mughal princess Qara Koz. He tells his story to the feared Emperor Mughal Akbar, of course knowing that belief or disbelief ... Read More:

Searching for truffles in a local wood, a man and his dog unearth a human hand. That hand eventually turns into an entire skeleton when the police dig up the surrounding ground. An entire skeleton robed in a decaying purple sheet, a cracked rib the only sign that the body might have met a death by violence. Investigations reveal that the body has been interred since a trench was dug 11 years ago in order to prepare to build houses the planning permission for which was later denied. However, the identity of the corpse remains a complete mystery. Then, a second body is found in a nearby abandoned house, and that has been there for many years as well...

Not in the Flesh is something like Rendell's 56th book, her 21st Wexford story. So far, the reviews I have ... Read More:

With English not as my native language, but as reader of all of Robinson's books form first print, I think that, although it is still a pageturner and perfect beach reader, the characters start getting bored. The "always right" Arnold Morgan, the "I see everything in the World" Ramshawe, "mighty unfailable" Hunter, unfailable NSA ... What is the problem with good "other" men in the US of A..... And unfortunatly in the end, the only character ever discribed in to depth is out of the next book. Although I will certainly order this next book I hope Robinson comes with something new and a more surprising plot.

Great novel. The journey from childhood to manhood is supposed to be full of joy and mystery, but this novel shows, doesn't tell, of what that journey is like during a world war. This book was banned by the Nazis when they came to power in 1933. If you read this novel, you'll understand why it was banned in Nazi Germany.

"All good books are different but all bad books are exactly the same" so writes Robert Harris at the beginning of 'Ghost'. He goes on to explain that they don't ring true, ". . .they don't pass the seaplane test". To find out what 'the seaplane test is you need to read Harris. For an example of it you need struggle to keep your interest alive in this latest and 'last' Rebus book. It doesn't ring true and it sems as though you can actually see the author working on it, unlike so many of his other novels. The twists and turns of the plot make everyone involved seem credible in the extreme and if like me you guess the end before it comes, and not just through guessing the killer of the Russian Poet but of the protagonist who tries to frame Rebus you will be disappointed more ... I got this book for Christmas but only got round to reading it recently. I'm about nine tenths of the way through now and, for a while now, it has truthfully read like some kind of bizarre pornography. By about half way through I was already thinking "yeah, ok mate, I get you - you're having a nervous breakdown. The picture has been painted wonderfully. Can we move on now please?" But it gets to that point and just sort of stalls. I keep picking it up to see if anything interesting is going to happen but, as yet, to no avail. I hate not finishing a book, so I probably will eventually, but it is just getting more and more about bizarre sex acts and less about anything relevant/interesting/intriguing, let alone resembling a coherent story line. It may well be a cult classic, ... Read More:
