I was rather disappointed by this. The author takes great care to describe the details of the lives and performances of the Medieval players, but for me the story never really caught fire and I did not find myself interested in any of the characters. Bit of a slog, despite being a short novel and firmly within an area of my interest.

Re-reading old favourites has become a bit of a habit with me lately - simply because there are few new authors with half the talent of Robert Graves.

As one reviewer points out, quite rightly, this isn't history, but the reader can't help but wish it to be true. The character of Claudius is so well drawn and accounts so well for the paradoxies evident in the historical accounts of him that you feel it must be right. There is nothing in the story that cannot be verified in Suetonius or Tacitus and Graves' handling of the material leaves the reader with nothing but admiration for his explanation of those facts.

Truly magnificent.

"Devils" Ahmad thinks. "These devils seek to take away my God. All day long at Central High School, girls sway and sneer and expose their soft bodies and alluring hair. Their bare bellies, adorned with shining navel studs and low down purple tatoos, ask, What else is there to see?"

So opens John Updike's book 'Terrorist,' which has been described as a political thriller which takes you into the mind of a terrorist. Certainly Ahmad is often easy to identify with. His opening thoughts, as he stands outside 'Central High', could be the thoughts of many westerners over forty, religious or irreligious, if you take out the reference to his God. The scene he witnesses and damns is common in many a town and city centre in England. However, I was willing to go ... Read More:

What a fascinating character!

One of those books that I was reluctant to finish as the last page drew nearer.

Prior to reading this book I only knew Peter Ustinov as the delightful character Hercule Poirot in Agatha Christie films. But I learned that he had a very long career in the theatre and that his talents seemed to include almost all areas in it.

His background alone makes for interesting reading. He is the child of Russian immigrants who settled in England but his (very talented) ancestors came from far and wide and included countries such as Ethiopia and Israel.

Parts of the book is written in the style of a soul searching dialogue between Peter Ustinov and himself, hence the title. He makes some insightful comments ... Read More:

'Rabbit, Run' is the first in a quartet of novels by the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist that revolve around the varying fortunes of a former high school Basketball champion Rabbit Angstrom. All four novels were written at the end of the a decade and published at the beginning of the next, and give a subjective flavour of modern American life as lived in small-town mediocrity. Angstrom observes the rapid transformations of the late 1950s here, and later the 60s (Rabbit Redux), 70s (Rabbit is Rich) and 80s (Rabbit at Rest), but is rather buffeted by them, lucid but always overwhelmed.

Updike makes it clear in his fascinating afterword that Rabbit "was for me a way in - a ticket to America all around me. What I saw through Rabbit's eyes was more worth telling than what ... Read More:

This book describes the interactions and feuds between Irish catholic farmers, the aristocracy and protestant workers from mid 19th century up to the start of the First World War. With rebellion brewing, the interactions are laced with poison, with all parties protecting and furthering their own interests.

The poignant moments of family crisis (births, deaths and marriages) are superbly portrayed, and there is energy in the build-up to key events, which almost compels but just falls short.

This is a well-written book, that describes background and history in great detail to back up the story. But it fails to build on the beginnings. The book builds a compelling plot to a point, but the conclusion moves into short summaries that are almost notes of the planned ending, ... Read More:

I got this a while ago, on the strength of an interview shown with Parkinson. Never heard of the man before this and being only 19 at the time, Ustinovs humour in serious situations, the acceptability of the situation without over consideration made me think a lot. Very funny, talented all-round performer that just oozed calmness and explained things as well as anyone. He was an intellectual man, often blaming the UK for not supporting the bright things of the country, and showed that bullying is often because of someone being jealous of anothers intellect. We are taught to be middle of the road people, not push to hard or you will be beaten up. It rings true, and in this audiobook, he discusses the various cultures of Europe and how they all differ. This is a good man, very charitable as will be ... Read More:

8.Claudius the God (Penguin Classics) by: Robert Graves

Coming after the incredibly good novel "I, Claudius", this second part describes the actual reign of Claudius until his death AD54. There may be some controversy about how much is fact and how much is fiction (Graves himself claimed everything is based on ample contemporary and later sources, and he says in the foreword 'few incidents here given are wholly unsupported by historical authority of some sort') but in fact that's besides the point. This is if nothing else a fabulous re-telling of one of the most influential and fascinating periods in Western history.

More importantly, it's also a riveting story with powerful insights into the nature and influence of power, ambition versus decency, etc. etc. so even if you couldn't care less about Rome it's still a great read.

Reading The Witches of Eastwick was slightly surreal for two reasons. One is that when I saw the film all those eons ago, I had no idea it was based on a book by Updike, and Jack Nicholson was so potent in his portrayal of Darryl Van Horne that his image haunts the book. The second is that Updike is one of my favourite authors, mainly because he can describe the mundanities of normal life with such perspicuity and acute perception that it makes my spine tingle. So I wasn't sure how I felt about him writing about witches - women with supernatural powers. Being on par with Richard Dawkins about this subject enflamed this disbelief.

Yet I greatly enjoyed The Witches of Eastwick. Most people will be familiar with its story through the eponymous film - three divorced women, Alexandra, Sukie and Jane, ... Read More:

Mila 18 is a breathtaking account of the Warsaw ghetto uprising, by the Jewish population of Warsaw, against the plans of the Nazi regime to exterminate them.
It is a great epic from the pen of one of the greatest novelists of the 20th century, Leon Uris.
The Warsaw ghetto uprisings are an important symbol of the freedom and dignity of mankind and the ongoing struggle against totalitarianism and cruelty (particular that type of cruelty that is self righteously practiced by ideologues from the left and right.).
The key characters are:
Andrei Androfski , the indomitable hero of a prestigious Polish cavalry regiment , and also a proud Jew.
Gabriella Rak , Andrei's pretty Polish sweetheart , one of the rare voices of conscience in a world gone mad .

Deborah Bronski , the ... Read More:
