After reading a review of "The Ripper Code" in the TLS, I had to return to my school favourite and reread it. It was fascinating to read it in a new light.

I came to Brideshead Revisited with high hopes, and to a certain extent they were realised. The dialogue sparkles with wit and verve, and the descriptions of aristocratic life between the war imbue the book with a faded glamour. The story initially revolves around the friendship between Charles Ryder and Lord Sebastian Flyte, an aristocratic student at Oxford whose eccentric lifestyle masks a deeper personal crisis. Roughly half way through the book, Sebastian's growing alcoholism drives an irreversable wedge between him and Charles, and for me, this is where the book slightly loses its way. I found Sebastian's alcoholic antics tedious, and the speed with which Charles breaks away from his former friend unlikely. The remainder of the novel, for ... Read More:

In my quest to read more work by Irish literary greats this year, I recently purchased a newly repackaged Penguin Popular Classic version of Oscar Wilde's 1895 play The Importance of Being Earnest. This edition, with its vibrant green cover and tracing-paper thin paper (all 100 per cent recycled), retails for a meagre £2 -- that's a very cheap price for a masterpiece, in my opinion.

I had seen a film version of this play a couple of years ago (the 2002 version starring Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Frances O'Connor, Reese Witherspoon and Judi Dench) and I remember laughing out loud at a lot of it. But seeing the words in black-and-white print makes them seem even funnier -- if that is possible.

For those who don't know the storyline, ... Read More:

This was actually the first 'adult' book I read as a child - much to the shock of my grandparents!! I loved it and reading it again as an adult (understanding it that much more)has assured it as a favourite. I would recommend anyone to read this. It covers issues of race, sexuality, family, friendships and gender fantastically. The film version is very good and the book is a must to read.

Having finished `Mrs Dalloway', I was left unsure whether I actually enjoyed the book. I can clearly see why it has received so much praise as Woolf's excellent use of language truly envelopes you in the psyche of Clarissa Dalloway and the thought processes of her other dramatic devices, particularly the visionary Septimus. However I was, as I am sure Woolf intended, irritated by many of Clarissa's flaws and despite some of her redeeming characteristics, I found part way through the book that I no longer wanted to continue following her train of thought. Luckily there was also plenty of substance to be found in the other characters that made me want to continue reading and by the end I felt I had a thorough understanding of each of every one of them. I would, on consideration, ... Read More:

In ordering this copy of 'A Streetcar Named Desire,'i was primarily expecting this book to be purely a textual dialogue of the play. Although after recieving the book (with haste- i don't hesitate to add), i was pleasantly surprised to encounter aids and prompts explaining in detail the situations and literary devices used to create such an effect. I totally believe that this book is a must have for those studying the american book at AS Level, or at any level for that matter!

'One sees a fin passing far out. What image can I reach to convey what I mean? Really there is none, I think.'

Woolf writing in her diary of 1925 reveals her life long concern with the problematic representation of experience. Her sense of reality's ineffability haunted all her major novels and in To the Lighthouse perhaps her art found its greatest expression.

The novel begins with a promise, a promise made by a mother to her small child that he can go and visit the lighthouse near where the large family holiday each year. It ends with the Lighthouse being reached finally years later after the mother's death. The process that takes us from a casual promise to its manifestation is for me one of the most magical journeys in literature. I'll be braver- one ... Read More:

I was quite enjoying this latest offering from Welsh, although it is by no means as well-written, or as "clever" as his previous novels. However, I soon began to have this feeling of deja vu...bloke on holiday with significant other and "his" children (in this case not in the physical sense, although the children, including the main character's own childhood self, are very much present and with us throughout)...bloke inadvertently gets into bother because of a bad habit...plot thickens..main character leaves other half and goes on long journey and discovers dodgy paedo network.
Of course! This is the plot of Will Self's latest novel, The Butt. I cannot believe the audacity!
this aside, "Crime" is in any case a disappointing departure from Welsh's usual style; it is also, in ... Read More:

Arguably Tennessee Williams' best loved and most popular play, 'A Streetcar Named Desire' is guaranteed to grip you from start to finish.

Set in 1950s New Orleans, the highly pretentious Miss Blanche Dubois visits her sister and brother-in-law, Stella and Stanley Kowalski. Blanche, "virtuous", sensitive and 'moth-like' is a cultured antithesis of Stanley with his overt sensuality and primal behaviour, providing the audience with a wonderful drama of emotions.

Williams cleverly unravels Blanche's shocking history through Stanley, whose determined investigations reveal her past mistakes from her inability to receive closure from her young husband's death. The delightful use of explicit and precise stage directions results in a fantastic array of tension-building music, ... Read More:
