In the introduction, the editor, Malcom Bradbury, sets out his intention in producing this collection: one was to 'display...the achievement of some the best work produced by the strongest of...recent Britsh authors'; and the other, what Bradbury claims to be a more difficult task, to be 'broadly representative, so that the book might give not only a reasonable idea of the variety, but also the general trends and directions that have been taken by British fiction in the years since 1945'.

Bradbury succeeds in both attempts. This is not paritcularly surprising since this is Bradbury's territory. The collection contains works by some of the biggest names in British Literature: William Golding, Samuel Beckett, Graham Greene, ... Read More:

"Heart of Darkness", Conrad's story itself, is no easy read. The language is heavy as poetry and undoubtedly as beautiful. In this critical edition you'll find background information about Conrad's journey through Africa, the historical period, collections of relevant images as well as very valuable critical essays on key themes and passages of piece. If you're at all interested in understanding this text, or if you intend to write about it in any great length in the form of essays, buy this book. It's worth it, and will help you to better appreciate especially the symbolism Conrad uses.

I read this book because it was on my Uni reading list, and I loved it. Rossetti's poems are powerful pieces of work that cover a variety of subjects: nature, the poet's own religion, and the relationships between men, women and families. They appeal both to emotion and intellect, and are well worth reading.

William Blake is one of the most influencial poets in history, and would make my list of top five poets ever any day of the week. 'Songs of Innocence and Experience' is his most famous and highly regarded set of poems, and rightly so too. 'Innocence and Experience' is unique in so far as there are a lot of poems with duplicate titles, but both poems will be from a completely different viewpoint, a different time in life; the poems from 'Innocence' will often reflect happiness and optimism etc, whereas the counterpart 'Expreience' poem will refelct completely the opposite, this allows Blake of course to make rather poignant comments on the corruption of innocence, as well as a lot of rather biting observations on 17th century society and in particular ... This book is amongst the most entertaining books I have ever read. It contains a wide range of subjects and styles ranging from P. G. Wodehouse's "The Reverent Wooing Of Archibald" to "A Widow's Quilt" by Sylvia Townsend Warner. The book alows the reader to choose his or her story according to mood or prefernence and thus makes for a very good thing. It is the wide range of storie and authors in the book that really make it so great. A. S. Byatt has selected the choicest morcels of litterary brilliance and added them all into this great collection. Thoughly worth a read or two.

This play is unique. When first reading it i thought that it was gross and it made me cry. But when analysing it and realising what edwawd bond was doing it made me find the book interesting anda very clever way to write a book. He isntactually talking about a baby getting killed his main effect is to show the audience what society is like today, and it really does happen. He is trying to make people look and see what is happening instead of hiding from the bad things that go on in society today

Forget the famous context of the author's suicide and read it for what it is - brilliant poetry and a truly unique account of one person's battle with manic depression, internally and externally. Astounding.

this is one of wilde's most intersting and dramtically effective plays which has the colourful creations of the manipulative Mrs Chevely to the naive and fickle Miss Markby. If you HAVE read any of his others plays and have enjoyed them then this is the play for you buy it now. Miss Davison said it is great
