It's been over a hundred years since Henry James' novella was published. I'm sure readers at the time were spooked by its tale of ghosts threatening the innocence of two children, and the attempts of a quasi-hysterical governess to save them. It was that period of the Victorian era when séances and ghosts were popular, when spiritists promised to bridge the road between the living and the dead. People enjoyed sitting around a fire and sharing ghost stories, specially during Christmas time.

But times have changed and this novella is now more interesting as a controversial piece of lit crit rather than a frightening ghost story. Did the ghosts in the story really exist? Or was it all part of the governess' imagination? You are never ... Read More:

Yes Hem deserves credit for his influence and descriptive story telling but this book showcases his weaknesses very well. Long boring passages of conversation which shed little light on the characters and go nowhere - he got better as he went on with coversation writing - , no real direction to the story and some lazy chapters. It only really gets going in 2 places - when he's dodging getting shot by the enemy, and the last few chapters.
He could write like no-one on earth but he WAS hit and miss.
"Fiesta", "to have", "old man", and "For whom the bell tolls" are better and his last few books (east of eden/islands...) - tho he was by now repeating himself - have their moments too..
read them 1st.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest examples of travel writing ever made, 'As I walked out one midsummer morning' is a massively engaging book.
At once visceral, heartfelt, honest, bursting with humanity and in some part disturbing, this account of a young man's walk through the Spain of the 1930s is a vicarious experience that transports the reader into an unforgettable but lost world.
There are occasions when Lee seems to have arrived at truly momentous turning points. After crossing the Guadarrama peaks he first sees Madrid in the plain of La Mancha and his knowledge of Spain is to become transformed by his experience of the capital. And then later, when he meets a Spanish sailor who portentiously warns "I don't know who you are, but ... Read More:

I don't approve of killing animals for entertainment, and this book did not change that disapproval. I endorse this book because of its qualities as a model for introducing a subject to a new learner, rather than for its subject matter.

If you like bullfights, you will like this book because Death in the Afternoon will probably expand your understanding of what you see. If you want to go to bullfights, this is a good book also because it will tell you how to do so in the most enjoyable way for you.

Most people will never attend a bullfight, because of ethical concerns, some personal dismay about their potential reaction to the violence and horror of the event, or due to lack of opportunity (bullfighting is mainly done in Spain and Mexico). ... Read More:

I question whether 'Soldiers of Salamis' is actually a novel. Essentially it is an investigation - a factual account of the research into an historic event by a disillusioned journalist, his bitter-sweet relationship (both sexual and otherwise) with his girlfriend, detailed accounts, complete with their physical attributes, of people he interviewed, together with descriptions of what was eaten and drunk, in which restaurants they were eating and what the view was from the window etc. He also describes his frustrations in not getting enough information during these meetings about the life and near death of his subject - Rafael Sanchez Mazas - co-founder of the Falangist Party, which was responsible for the destruction of a flawed, yet legitimate, democracy, and the visitation ... 9.EL Juego Del Angel (Vintage Espanol) by: Carlos Ruiz Zafon
May 01, 2008
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : EL Juego Del Angel (Vintage Espanol)
My personal opinion is that the previous book by Zafon was of better quality.

Although I couldn't stop reading the "El juego del angel" -sometimes even obsessively-, it was more to know what happened at the end rather than enjoying the reading. I found the story very dark, too dark unnecessarily at times.

I found that the style was less sophisticated and less rich comparing to "The shadow of the wind".

However, I will be looking forward to the third part of the trilogy. It was definitely a good reading to end the day after work!
