I bought this book 3 years ago before starting my LLB, and bought it again last week as I hope to study for an LLM next year and wanted to brush up on my legal skills.

The book is very good at getting a prospective law student to think like a lawyer. It sets out very well the areas that a student needs to know about, such as judicial precedent, statutory interpretation and the now unavoidable influence of the European Union and the European Convention on Human Rights on English law.

Two minor criticisms. Firstly, I think the authors do not clarify or explain certain topics enough, especially as this is aimed at students who have not yet studied Law. Secondly, there are countless typing and printing errors in the 6th ... Read More:

Having previously attempted to study Law at University, I thought I'd never find a book which made Law accessible. That was before I got this book.
It is an easy to read, accessible, down-to-earth book which lays down the basics that all Law students need to know. If you previously thought that My above description is an oxymoron when referring to law books, you're wrong. This book is a MUST-HAVE for all students of English Law.

At the time I only bought Bringing Down The House, that was a mistake, I should have got Breaking Vegas at the same time. I will go back and give the book another read (you can speed-read very quickly thanks to Mezrich's writing) since I watched the faction film "21" at the cinema last month. Anyone wanting the true story, this is the closest you'll get.

After reading this book, I question how my ignorance regarding the law had managed to be so far-reaching! If you are looking for an in-depth discussion of the development of, and current, legal situation, this is not the book for you. By its own admission, it is intended purely as an introduction with aspects of development and explanation thrown in - but this is not a weakness of the book by any means. As a prospective law student, this book allowed me to begin to enter the world of the law, with all its manifest profundities and absurd historic quirks, and it is a world I look forward to learning more about.
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in how our society functions or for anyone about to be involved in legal proceedings ... Read More:

This book gives a clear explanation of some of the unclear parts of BS7671:2008

However, there are mistakes in it which could lead to electricians unwittingly making non-compliant installations. For example, the guide says several times that you don't need an RCD on cables installed less than 50mm deep if they are in the 'safe zones'. However, BS7671:2008 specifically says that you DO need an RCD in that situation (522.6.7).

So, the book is good, but you must read and understand BS7671:2008 as well!

As a working journalist, this is the only book I (and every colleague I've ever worked with on any newsdesk) reach for time and time again. Not only is it bang up to date, it explains all aspects of reporting law clearly and succinctly.
Unsure of what libel is? How to defend against it? Are you in contempt of court? Breaching the Official Secrets Act? Taking photographs of children? Invading somebody's privacy? McNae's knows. And it's written in a way to tell you quickly.
It's known as The Bible in the regional newsrooms I've worked in all my life - and it's easy to see why when you read it. I can't recommend this highly enough: EVERY reporter should have their own copy.

personally i found this book to be very helpful, the method of analysing law problem questions and discuss questions are exceptional. however the book does repeat itself and sometimes goes in to to much detail about irrelevant information. Would higly recommend this book to law students who are beginnng their law studies.

Recently I started working for myself and last year I had to fill in a UK self-assessment tax return for the first time. When I got the tax form from the Tax Office my heart sank - there were so many things I had to fill that I didn't understand. Furthermore the guidance notes that came with the form seemed to assume a level of understanding that was far greater than mine. Luckily I found this book on Amazon - there is no way I could have filled in my tax return accurately without it!

It is packed with information on tax matters for small businesses and it is clearly written with loads of examples to help explain the various calculations. I found the sections on expenses, capital allowances and working from home especially helpful as I was previously uncertain ... Read More:
