It took me a couple of days to read this book. It is a real eye opener into the underworld of gangsterism and mafia. At times the statements were a little scary but, I felt, truthful.
This book tells the story of Carlton Leach and his friendship with Nigel Benn and the Essex boys. There are stories of his life and how the underworld of drugs functions. His account of the murders and his days of the doorman and security at the famous Ministry of Sound is excellent.
I am now reading Bloggs 19. These books are recommended for anyone interested in gangland accounts. Highly recommended.

Sorry, but I hated this book, it grated on me from the first page.

The charachters, the dialogue, the story - I just didn't connect with any of it - I found it tiresome, tedious and unbelievable (what's with the charachter names? Strike, The Word, Futon, Thumper, Peanut, Duck, Big Chief, - I found them laughable - they totally detracted from what's supposed to be a serious book).

And the dialogue! who speaks like the characters in this novel? - some of it made me laugh out loud - yet another thing that detracted from the supposed realism.

It's also VERY American, if you're not familiar with American products and terminology you'll probably get confused quite quickly (chapter 1 - I didn't know what a bottle ... Read More:

5.The Corner: a Year in the Life of an Inner-city Neighbourhood by: David Simon
July 01, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Corner: a Year in the Life of an Inner-city Neighbourhood
A remarkable work of journalism, even exceeding Simon's more famous work 'Homicide: A Year On The Killing Streets'.
The reader is taken into a world few of us would dare approach as outsiders but almost immediately we are empathising with most of the characters.
This book is a terrible endictment of inner cities throughout the world, but especially in America. Aspirations are crushed by the surrounding apathy and good intentions drowned by the endless supply of readily available, highly addictive cheap drugs. The complete breakdown of the education system and any sort of meaningful law and order, described and explained by Simon in horrific detail, show that the next generation(s) are doomed to follow the old as avenues of escape are all but cut off.

This is an interesting read as it covers the life of a self confessed junkie without the slightest attempt to glamourise or excuse.

The style is a little basic but, hey, this is an autobiography by someone who has spent too much time on "the wild side of life" & literary style was not high on the agenda.

Salutory lessons abound within this book & none more so than the fact that the sooner society faces up to the real problem of addiction in whatever form the better but yet there is hope as well.

Inspiring if only from the aspect of what have we done with our lives from a more privileged position?

I was looking forward to reading this, but I found it a really hard read & quite boring. The events take place in the seventies, and don't give a realistic picture of the cocaine smuggling trade of the present day.

If the description said it was from the 70's then maybe I would have known what to expect.

A disapointment and glad I didn't pay for it

Just a first class story very well written. I'd managed to keep up with the press coverage, at the time, but wish i hadn't waited this long to get the book. Still, better late than never...can't really add to what's already been said by other reviewers, suffice to say that it really does have everything that you'd want in a 'rise and fall' adventure, especially given Mclean's obvious intellect.

Simply one of the most refreshing and illuminating books I have read in the area of drug theory, and the implications of drug theory for drug policy. In the current anti-intellectual climate towards how we speak and how we are supposed to think about 'drugs' this book is a bold as it is original. His other work isn't bad, either!
