A real eye opener.

This book may be a little difficult for some to come to terms with and for others even more difficult to accept. It is something that has been placed in the psyche of us in Europe after the horrors of the holocaust that any criticism of the state of Israel or Zionism is equal to anti semitism. That the state of Israel was created out of the ashes of the second world war in order to provide a safe and free land for Jews the world over and a place of return for the Jews to their historical homeland.

This book dispels the myth. Pappe rather presents the establishment of the state of Israel as being not only created by men whose ideology was every equal of the extreme nationalism that European Jews ... Read More:

This is obviously the reference work on the phenomenon of moral panics and as such essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand the topic. As a work of social science it can be hard going at times and is probably not for the casual reader, however those with a reasonable understanding of the subject area will find it a generally very readable work.

The new introduction for the third edition is also an excellent review of some of the moral panics of the last few years.

A very positive resource for parents who will be faced with many of these now clearly defined and common issues and experiences. Especially useful for parents who won't have the expeiences their child will know.

Sometimes though it seems a bit anecdotal and also too flattering - many children who aren't TCK often feel the same way as those described by the authors. It's like reading a description of your horoscope sign and saying "OMG that's so me!"

I'd have liked a more researched read - the 'Endnotes' are usually autobiographical in nature. Perhaps there is not a lot of formal research conducted on this topic. If so then this is an encouraging guidebook for the increasing numbers of parents of TCKs.

I read the book cover to cover in a couple of hours. This is mostly down to the vast majority of content being pretty basic and useless. I agree with the critical reviews already published. There's an awful lot of generalisation, little facts or detail. Says tax is higher, but not what the rates are, says wages are lower - but not how much in proportion to cost of living. Gives advice to research in advance, but mostly refers to the Govt immigration website. Advice on jobs and/or careers is poor. So in terms of decision making, it doesn't help one way or another. It's ok for a second-hand book to read, but if you're looking for a serious book to give you the hard facts of living and working in Australia, this isn't the one!

I shamed to admit that after 20 years work in medicine and research reading this book gave me understanding of many seemed to me terrible features of statistics. I dreamed of reading such book for a long time. I only can say "later better than never" and I am very happy and pleased that I found this book. English is not my first language but even that this book so easy readable and an excellent tutor. I wish it will be translated to other many languages.
Thank you, dear Frances Clegg. I fill like a shroud has been taken from my eyes and now World of Statistics has opened its door to me.

This is one of the most harrowing books I have read for years. Sean O`Callaghan is to be thanked for bringing this history to light.
Anyone from England reading this would have a re-think on their countrys history, no wonder this horror was hidden, not so in Ireland, this was featured in an Armagh history Annual many years ago.
This was only one episode of Englands rule in Ireland throughout the centuries, this book should be included in every school library in Britain.

Books : Moving to the United States of America and Immigration
Don't get me wrong, this book has a good level of information about a lot of the issues that you need to consider if making the move to the US: house purchase, tax, visa, credit score etc.
It is easy to easy and quick to read and written in a simple and informal way.
The section I think I would like to see is something about healthcare. This isn't mentioned at all and I think it must be up high on most people's priorities when thinking of making this move, as the US system is so different from the one in the UK. Definitely a big omission.
Even with this though it is a good buy.

Now, I know something about dislocation. I found my ID card amongst my mother's papers. Filled in seven days after my birth in Aug 1949 with the address of my first home, by the time I was 10 months old, 3 change-of-address sections had been filled in. I was 4 y.o. on the ship going out to Singapore. We had 3 more homes there in the next three years.

When my father was posted back to Europe, we continued this rate of moving. I was sent to boarding school in England as an attempt to mitigate the disturbing business of constantly changing schools. The result was that sometime I came 'home' to find that my parents had moved while I was at away. The 'home' I had left was now 'home' in some quite other place. Sometimes I came back to find that it was my pals from next door or down ... Read More:

While studying for my A-Levels I had the opportunity to pick and research my own project. I picked the Irish Potato Famine because no one in my class had ever heard of it. I didn't really know much about it myself but I found this Book in a local bookstore and found that it explains things in a way that is easy to understand and yet extremly informative. It outlines the most important facts and speaks generally about others, it lists facts and figures as well as the names and dates of important people and events. It also refers to other good books on the subject and it made me really think about this black period in Irish history. I went on to get an A for my reseach Project and i am now studying Irish History in University and once again I find myself turning to this book for information. ... Read More:
