This is an excellent book which helps give insight onto many subjects which really help understand how we work as people, it's highly reccomended reading which will make you look at the world around you in a completely different way. The reason why it doesn't get the fifth star is because not all sociology related subjects are covered (not much of a problem as I can only think of two at the moment and when the book does give information on the subject it's really interesting and will keep you hooked)The next problem is that this book's language can be quite complex (but that's not much of a problem as a dictionary is easily accesible). Despite being a recommended book for OU sociology courses, this doesn't cover a lot of sociological concepts. Very disappointing, and I'm going to have to get another sociological dictionary that covers the ground more completely.

Enjoyable to read and a fantastic book for anyone learning Criminology. I am doing it at A-Level, in order to get to University so found some parts challenging to understand (as the book is based at Degree level) but you really get the jist of meanings and terms. A real must have.

In a nutshell, the comprehensive entries, covering the broad spectrum that is Human Geography, make this book a must for all students of the subject. Also provides useful reference points for any further reading you may wish to do.

This clear, concise book is a god-send for the student (or general reader alike) interested in carrying out a sociology-based research project. The text is lively, enthusiastic, laying emphasis, through the voice of many experts, on the best ways to carry out a social investigation. Although the text is hard going in a few places with an occasional assumption of prior knowledge, its strategically placed references to real world research and well-thought out case studies make this a student-essential reference book. Definitely one to keep on the shelf and dip into!

Professor Walklate's introduction to the field of criminology promises to be "easy to read, concise and supported by a glossary of terms and pointers to further reading". The first is sadly wide of the mark, though the latter claims are substantiated by a reading of the text. Criminology is a complex field and Professor Walklate's range of reference is helpful in breaking down the completing claims of various groups (sociologists, politicians, the judiciary etc) and their definition of the field. The use of case studies is also helpful, locating the sometimes obtuse academic praxis of the subject in readily identifiable narratives which shed an interesting light on both those narratives and the subject itself. A reasonable introduction into anthropology, splitting halfway between a discussion of the theoretical underpinnings of the field and examples of cultural diversity in various areas (religion, possessions, relationships, etc.). The examples are completely fascinating, but the theoretical discussions are somewhat dry and although they don't shirk from describing the mammoth difficulties in studying a different culture, to my mind betray the shaky pseudo-scientific ground that anthropology rests on.

The book provides an oustanding background knowledge of all aspects of geography. It covers the basics for students at GCSE level through to Degree students. It also links with related subjects notably Environmental Management. There are a wide range of further contact addresses. The book follows a systematic approach but for students studying more specialized subjects there may be further reading required.

This book has cleared a muddled mind (in relation to quantitative analysis anyway). Highly recommended for anyone who is becoming more and more stressed about statistical analysis etc. and isn't getting any joy from anywhere. Reading this got me out of a mathematical rut. It sets everything out in understandable categories, is nicely layed out(not too crammed in)and is written in plain English. The Author sorts it all out for you. Thank you so much Mr. Author!!!
