Rod Heikell's guides are seen as the definitive guides to sailing (cruising) in Greek waters.

Ports, harbours and marinas are clearly and accurately described and the diagrams are clear and easy to follow. We sailed recently in Greece and along with the Imray chart, this guide formed all the information you are likely to need.

My one complaint is that co-ordinates are not given for the ports, harbours, marinas and other points of interest such as quiet anchorages and bays. To input these into the GPS meant going back to the chart, where it would have been so much easier to be able to lift them straight from the guide. Hopefully this will be fixed in later editions. Otherwise an essential guide to anyone wanting to cruise ... Read More:

This book offers travel information on the Ionian Islands off the west coast of Greece and the adjacent mainland, with emphasis on yachting.

I live on the largest of those islands (Cephalonia), and while no place in the world is perfect, I can say that the presentation by the author is at times unfair. The author derides Greek food and wine. Having travelled in Great Britain myself, I couldn't help but chuckle. Here is how the author describes Greek food: "The principal meal in Greece is the midday meal and most oven-cooked dishes are prepared in the morning for this meal. In the evening these dishes will simply be partially reheated and served up as an overcooked lukewarm mess." Plainly, the author will have you believe that Greek ... Read More:

We bought this map for a holiday on Crete in early 2008 and we used a hire car to get around the island. We are usually good at using maps to find our way but with this one we wasted a lot of time on wrong turnings.

The statement in the synopsis that "every road is included" is far from true. It is just not anything like that detailed. To add to the difficulty, there are a lot of major road developments underway on Crete and the map has become badly out-of-date. A good map is needed because of the lack of signposting especially in towns and villages. The coastal resorts have also seen numerous route changes and little seems to correspond to what is on the map. Sometimes a large hotel would be found where the map indicated a road going ... Books : Map of Western Crete (Maps of Greek islands)
I totally agree with the previous reviewer that this is an excellent map with plenty of detail in you want to explore this beautiful island by car and on foot. I was amused by the fact that petrol stations are shown as we have never been anywhere with as many as Crete.

I don't know how we would have managed to negotiate Chania and Rethynmno without the street plans on this map which correctly set out the one way system. Without such a plan of Heraklion, we managed to drive the wrong way down a one way street there!

Place names are all in Greek and English which helps in interpreting road signs - in small places these are sometimes only signposted in Greek.

I agree that the map is very flimsy - it started to ... Read More:

This map is printed on a strage plasticky paper which is very tear resistant and also accidental-drop-in-rock-pool proof. It is easy to handle and refold. When folded it is a nice compact size but opens out pretty big. It is very clear and easy to use to find places with the index. The map has Southern Greece on one side and Northern on the other - my only criticism is that I always open it the wrong way up for which side I'm looking for!

This is the worst wrongly described product i have ever purchased from Amazon. It is sold as a "Road Map" when it arrived it is a hiking map with just three or four areas of Crete shown in detail but no main roads the very reason i purchased it as i shall be driving in Crete.
