The Quran is both a sacred text and a supreme work of Arabic poetry. This puts the translator in a dilemma: To convey the religious teaching, the text needs to be rendered into modern prose, which loses the poetry. To convey the poetry, one must render the text as a poem in modern language, which then tends to obscure the religious teaching. Neither approach can fully translate the original.

Abdel Haleem's translation is a masterful rendition into modern English prose. For rendition as modern English poetry, Arberry's translation for OUP is arguably the best. If you want to understand the Quran in English, your best bet IMO is to use Abdel Haleem AND Arberry.

It's rare to find autobiography as absorbing as this. Not only because of the author's unusual path from the desert of Somalia to the USA via the Netherlands, but also on account of the absorbing writing style. Clear and descriptive, the narrative of her eventful life had a profound impact on this reader. Born and raised in Somalia, Ayaan spent part of her youth in neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Kenya, recounting what it was like to live there through the eyes of a child.

She gives a lively account of the history of Somalia under the dictatorship of Siad Barre, explaining the clan system and comparing the relaxed Muslim practice in that country with the rigidy of Saudi Arabia and the hypocrisy and racism that go along ... Read More:

I know some people have commented that this book came across as obscure and complex, but luckily for me I didn't find that. I found it incredibly helpful and illuminating in what is a deeply complex religion. The key facts that I was able to take away with me have helped to shape my understanding of Islam and what it means to be a Muslim. I thought that it was well written and extremely interesting.

I bought this on a whim after a trip to Egypt that left me confused about what I was seeing at home and abroad in regard to women in Islam. Easy to read and not at all 'dry' the text is written by a journalist who I feel has avoided simply reporting stereotypes (as one reviewer has alleged) while not shying away from any truth in assumptions those ignorant to Islam or the Middle East may have made. She talks to progressive Muslims as well as hard-liners and though perhaps it is clear she supports a more progressive view I think she represents both sides with care.

I found it a fascinating read and certainly something I would recommend in a time when fear and ignorance are prominent in the way people react to a religion they don't necessarily ... Read More:

Books : The Meaning of the Holy Qur'an English/Arabic: New Edition with Arabic Text and Revised Translation, Commentary and Newly Compiled Comprehensive Index
This was one of the best Qur'an translations I have come across - I really liked the footnotes and Abdullah Yusuf Ali obviously had a lot of zeal and passion for translating and explaining the beauty of the ayat. I liked his footnotes, and the words he used to translate the Noble Qur'an. I also liked the layout and the clarity of the side-by-side Arabic and English text; additional transliteration may have improved it I think. I would suggest using several Qur'an translations and comparing the words used because that shows just how the meaning can be interpreted often in slightly different ways. The Qur'an exists in Arabic, anything else is just an interpretation of the meaning and English can seem sometimes just too thin to convey the original essence.

I love this little book, and dip into it often. The translation is very good, unlike some volumes of Rumi's work where the "translators" have given themselves rather a free rein.

For the quality of selection, however, my favourite remains Juliet Mabey's Rumi: A Spiritual Treasure which is beautifully arranged and rather easier to find your way around. But all in all a lovely book, and highly recommended.

Amazing how people can base their whole existence on the interpretation of visions that some guy had a very long time ago. Absolutely the scariest read I have had for a long time. No wonder we have the problems with Muslims that we do.
