Having counted myself within the endless ranks of readers somewhat disappointed with 'Descent of Angels', I naturally threw caution to the next Horus Heresy installment.
It's not that 'Descent...' was dull to read or poorly written, but Mitchel Scanlon's novel was the first Heresy novel that concerned itself primarily with non-astartes (or at least pre-astartes) individuals, a factor which would surely hinder a Horus Heresy novel. I was therefore sceptical about how effective a story that placed an Imperial Guard regiment at the forefront could be.
Fortunately, 'Legion' triumphs: characters are genuinely likeable (or detestable), the story is engrossing and, unlike Scanlon's novel, it doesn't hold back on Astartes fluff; Horus and ... Read More:

I was nervous about this book at the outset. It is the first of the heresy books which is not about Loken and i was concerned about how the change would be pulled off. It turns out that i was needlessly worried and the book excellenty melds new caractors with old the first half of the book being the Last half of the previous book from the point of veiw of Garro. this creats a sense of unity so when the book moves on the story a peice of the trilogy of Loken seems to be taken with the story. A great read that realy amps up the potential of the following books

If you've read any of my other reviews you will see my biggest issue with this series is how rambling and poorly edited they are. Indeed the promised show down mentioned at the end of book 3 finally happens here at the end of book 5. But finally the promise of book 1 is realised 4 books later.

So here we have the fall from grace of Fulgrim. Now of all the Chaos Gods Slaanesh is always the most intriguing. It is the god of lust and decadence and while you can see marines falling for the bloodlust of Khorne (less so for the decay of Nurgle) the idea of a decadent fall sounds very human. After all how many warriors have been suckered by feminine charms and a comfy sofa rather than years on horseback fighting through the mud?

It's all ... Read More:

This is where the traitor legions tear their loyal parts off and become a "stronger legion".
The story is well writen and fast paced in Ben Counter style. It portray's the Isstvan III massacre and ultimately has a sad ending. It does have lots of battles though and is certainly worth the read, although some how it didnt leave me as emotionally effected by the end unlike its predecessor, but more than the first volume.

In my opinion it wasn't the best of the original trilogy but did point me in the right direction for other black library publications (in terms of author). 5 stars!

This is the big one. The one where you know who turns sides. The whole transformation to traitor is an intriguing and thoroughly worthwhile read.
It introduces one of the ruinous powers of chaos and well.
Again full of sinister plots and betrayals, a fantastic read.
The one reason why it wouldnt get 100/100 is because McNeill seems to put too many storylines running parallel to one-another. This made me frustrated at times, but the fact that other than this the book is amazingly well writen and engrosing I couldnt think twice about putting the book down.
I genuinley felt sad after this book, which shows I had been drawn into an emotional bond over the two beginning volumes. Great writing 5 stars!

The problem with reader reviews on Amazon is almost every book ends up being a 4 or 5 star must read because the fans write the reviews. This doesn't tell you how the book really compares to other works. Let's face it we all know that most books produced are not 5 star masterpeices of art. So let me try and add some balance.

The writing is good and it is at times thought provoking, there is more here than blood and thunder. However the biggest flaw is the story telling. I got sucked into this series apparently without end so I am hoping you may be forewarned unlike me.

This is a first of a trilogy which by the end sets up the Horus Heresy. 3 books to get to the start of the story. Now what happens is interesting but that over a 1,200 pages to start a tale, that's longer than ... Read More:

Quite honestly I don't know what the point of this book is. It's set before all of the other novels in the heresy series and has no relevance to the other books at all. It has only the vaguest reference to the Dark Angels chapter that it claims to reveal all the hidden truths about. Primarch Lion El' Jonson is treated more as a subsidary character who remains on the periphery of the story all the way until the end. It seems to be the story of some guy who nobody's ever heard of or cares about becoming an astartes. The books not the worst 40K novel I've read but it just isn't anywhere near as interesting as the others in the series. The other Heresy books enlighten you about the main players in the Horus Heresy that have always interested me since I first got into 40K all those years ago; Horus, Dorn, Sanguinius, ... Read More:

New ideas and characters with some of the good old ones from Gridlinked.
Gabbleducks are not quite as comical as the name suggests and again a very good read. Big fan of the stretches the human mind can make with sci fi in space and ASHER does this very well. Still not quite Peter HAMILTON but very close. On to the BRASS MAN
