Forget the tourist uniform of backpack and Lonely Planet/Rough Guide in hand.... you're going to need both hands to carry all the 'bargains' that the salesmen of Marrakech have so considerately helped you spend your money on!

This is a tremendous little guidebook to carry in your pocket as you wander round Marrakech.
The old Medina is a rabbit-warren of alleyways (you WILL get lost, so enjoy the experience!), so to have a well thought out little book like this on you is a real help. It is just the right size (and weight!) to slip into the leg pocket of your combat trousers or back pocket of your jeans, and has just enough practical information about sights of interest, shopping, restaurants etc etc, to keep you busy. I found ... Read More:

I visited Morocco in Spring this year and found that the level of detail in the Rough Guide to Morocco was impressive. The guide is straight forward and easy to use and was full of details I wouldn't have even thought of expecting from a guide book, but definitly appreciated reading. Packed with every detail from which airlines fly into Morocco, to examples of traditional Moroccan myths, it was the perfect companion for our trip! It gave us practical details, which were accurate and helpful and at the same time gave us an insight into the complex culture. I started using Rough Guides with a trip to Stockholm last December and now I'm hooked!

Thoroughly enjoyable read. I find Annie Hawes impressive in the extreme in that she really knows her subject and her reader! I loved my travels with her but sadly missed the de Giglio family and all her Italian friends. I learned an awful lot about women of Islam and how they cope with the extremes of this religion. Annie presents a book which is humourous and yet holds the dignity of the way of life and customs of the land she travels in.

The writer's year in Marrakesh was not about seeing the sights and learning the history - rather, it was about his engagement with the real people of his neighbourhood as he gets drawn into their lives. A clearer picture than you get from the pompous, passive travel writing that casts an eye on a culture and tells you what to visit there. Thoroughly engaging.

This guide is generally quite good. it is comprehensive and the maps held in it are excellent for finding your way around.

It covers all the usual stuff as well as some basic background info and good references for restaurants, hotels and sights.

However, there are one or two niggles that let it down.

Sights are covered often in a number of different places and only sometimes referenced between them. Items which are not open or not yet open at time of going to press are mentioned, but with limited info making it difficult to find out whether they are now open (2 years after publishing). The biggest annoyance is page references. Where another sight or shop / restaurant is referenced in the book, the page numbers are ... Read More:

Somewhat self-regarding and self-congratulatory. Lots of 'how awful life must be in Britain and how wise I am to get away from it all'. Some very odd ideas of life in London - 'thick fog and black ice in winter'? Not been a thick fog in London for 3 decades, and relatively few black ice patches.

The story keeps the interest going, though no cliche is left unturned. Luckily, the author seems to have a bottomless well of dollars to pay for sixty workers at any one time, even at Moroccan rates. Slightly easier to get away from that terrible ordinary existence in London if you have such loot. Most Moroccans I know can't afford a car, let alone a Caliph's House and their daily existence rather lacks the freedom to choose 800 feet of cedar wood ... Read More:
