I bought this book for my 1st trip to HK (about 2 weeks ago). I found it great at 1st that it comes with a pull-out map but realise after; everywhere I go there were maps provided for including the hotel+tubes! The eating places suggested were over-rated and some of the local eats like the famous local HK pastry "wife biscuit" or "wanton noodles" were never mentioned which seems rather tragic.
Also, the nightlife suggested by the book was also so-so........ Instead i got to know about the hottest club (Club Beijing) from a local hairdresser doing my hair. The book also failed to mention that there was a hot bar right above Hotel LKF with fantastic view + the people tend to be dressier on Saturday than Friday!

Overall, i ... Read More:

3.Rough Guide to Southeast Asia (Rough Guide Travel Guides) by: Rough Guides

Books : Rough Guide to Southeast Asia (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
All the SEA in about 1000 pages. I travelled from Indonesia to Cambodia and for every city and place I visited, this guide always gave useful and up-to-date informations on budget/upmarket accommodations, things to see, transports, nightlife.
Particulary appreciated the advices for crossing the borders and the overland routes in SEA. Obviously all the descriptions are very concise, but u get what u need for your trip, and sometimes the less turistic areas are left-out or shortly pointed out (though it's even nicer to find new, interesting places by yourself ...). But the only alternative is to buy a guidebook on each country u want visit in Asia!

Highlight: useful maps (more accurated than LP in my opinion) and complete urban ... Read More:

4."Time Out" Hong Kong: Macau and Guangzhou (Time Out Hong Kong) by: Time Out Guides Ltd

Books : "Time Out" Hong Kong: Macau and Guangzhou (Time Out Hong Kong)
We regularly travel with Time Out guides as we find them to be up-to-date and well researched. This version - sadly - is not. Key details (e.g. opening times, map details, etc.) seemed to be wrong or out of date. Ordinarily I would whole-heartedly recommend TO guides but for HK I'd suggest trying a different brand.

A neat, pocket sized guide that covers the essentials for a weekend; but really falls short on the mapping. It has very small local maps included in the text, but these are difficult to follow when walking as they omit many streets, only name some streets and do not join up.
It also seemed out of date, a couple of restaurants had vanished and new roads built, but of course Hong Kong is changing so quickly that this must be a problem that any guide faces.

Books : Hong Kong and Macau (Lonely Planet City Guide)
Generally a fan of lonely planet books and although the book was a good buy, I didn't find it execptional either (though I haven't seen any other books so couldn't recommend anyting better). Had a good overview of Hong Kong and good description of the essential places. What was a bit annoying is that the book isn't organised by area (this is where i am, what can i do?) but more my activity (this is what you can do, where can you do it?) - must city guides do it this way though. Was also missing more upscale places (bars, clubs). Summary: good buy in the abscence of anything better

Found the Rough Guide really difficult to follow and it seemed badly laid out.
Used an AA guide instead, which was fantastic and I would highly recommend that.

I first was attracted to this book by its cover--a charming photo of the happy faces of a group of Chinese men watching an opera and, once I had read my first story, "A Perfect Pig", describing Mr. Chung Wa Pui's long search for the perfect little white jade pig, I knew this was no ordinary book. These, indeed, are "traveler's tales"--personal accounts selected from the writings of diverse individuls who have visited or lived in Hong Kong--choice selections offering a pleasing mix of fact and folklore.

Did you know, for example, that the Portuguese influence in the East was such that Portuguese foods, architectural designs, and even Portuguese words were borrowed by the Chinese and others? The Chinese word "joss", ... Read More:
