Until now we have always rated Lonely Planet guide books highly. However this one on Istanbul is very disappointing and misleading. Although the description of places and buildings is good, the layout is very irritating as you frequently have to change sections to find all the details you want. It is out of date as regards the times places are open and the entry prices charged. The index is far too complicated. Come on Lonley Planet you can do much better than this!

An unusual and insightful guide to what remains for many a mysterious city. At the same time, a personal memoir that is wry, moving, and original. I feel as though I now have a good friend to whisper in my ear as I navigate the streets of Istanbul, no longer clueless.

I have visited Istanbul around nine times and Izmir about seven. This guide will really take you to the wrong hotels and restaurants. The cultural guide is ok despite a rather boring layout, esp. maps. But the restaurant suggestions are disasterous: where do you find Istanbul's best gourmet, Corne d'Or, or the intellectual bastion Yakup 2, or the best chicken and mezes in Istanbul (Hanedan), or the nostalgic charm of Istanbul's 1930's belle epoque (Rejans)? Instead mediocre places are recommended which will give the dogmatic reader a mediocre holiday. Also, Lonely Planet does not mention the new hotel in Izmir (Crowne Plaza Izmir) which receives raving critics. Does it not know of it yet? And no mention of restaurants like Bonjour, British Grill ... Read More:

Invaluable, had information even the locals we were staying with didn't know: and was so good they asked if they could have it after we left Istanbul. Didn't leave my side the whole time. Isaw this thing in the hands of so many tourists in several different languages, especially on the Bosphorus trip. The maps were very useful for us and so should be for most, provided you know how to read a map. Forget contact lenses and emergency money; if you only bring one thing with you make it this travel guide.

As an introduction to Turkey, I feel that this is the best all-round guide available. Not too heavy, visually inspiring and with honest and sensible text. Independant travellers may find Lonely Planet more useful as it is more comprehensive. This guide contains accurate and useful info on all the essential sites to be seen in Turkey.

Time Out guides are the best single guides for city breaks and the Istanbul guide is a case in point. Accomodation and entertainment listings are critical and comprehensive and the information for tourists informative and helpful. However the maps at the back could be more useful. For a visual guide to the city look at DK. Anyone from a week-end tourist to a long term expat would find this invalubale.

Having just returned from my first visit to Turkey I can only agree with the negative comments voiced by other reviewers. The general tone veers between sneering at the reality of turkish society and derision of anything that remotely relates to the general tourist. All this would be bad enough were the text not hopelessly out of date. Selecting a couple of examples at random from an extraordinary list of errors; Descriptions of the Bodrum penisula include references to sailing schools in Bitez. Guys! - all the schools moved further round the peninsua at least 3 years ago. For Ephesus the visitor is instructed to walk from the lower to upper gates (insane if you've ever been there), no warning of the extreme heat everyone will experience - even in Spring. ... Although I was the right generation, sadly(?) I didn't take the hippie trail in the 60s/70s - nonetheless I really enjoyed this book. I did have a couple of friends who did make the journey and one wrote back to me at various points along the way and therefore many topics in the book are familiar from those letters. The book tells the history of the trail and examines why the 'intrepids' wanted to make this journey from the West to India and beyond. It also follows a journey MacLean made along what is left of the trail and his encounters with people who remembered the original hippie travellers. I found the comments on the effects the hippies had on the countries they travelled through very interesting, particularly when you realise those countries include Iraq, Iran, ... Read More:
