As a general introduction to any of the many cities covered by this series, the DK Eyewitness books are invaluable. I own several. However, in common with others in the collection, the accuracy of hotel, and notably restaurant, recommendations in Rome is poor. On several visits to Rome and using the most up-to-date version of the guide at the time, restaurants had closed and in one case, the building no longer existed at the stated address! For food and accommodation try something else. One final gripe. The series provides information on principle sites. Excellent information. It seldom, however, provides adequate information on how to find the site in the first place.

I am usually a fan of the Rough Guides range of travel books. However I found this one really difficult to use. The maps didn't cross reference easily meaning you had to hunt through each separate section using another map to find what you were looking for. Trying to find a recommended restaurant was almost impossible. On the plus side the introduction was very useful and details regarding rules and regulations for the more religious areas of Rome were excellent. There are some good hints and tips in here but overall the book was too complicated to use and as such stayed in the hotel room.

I'm quite a fan of the Time Out series when it comes to city guides. This guide to Rome was very good, we tried out some of the recommended restaruants and also found our hotel through this book, which was an excellent choice. The biggest complaint would probably be the maps.Sometimes it seemed to be a bit tricky to find what you were looking for.Also on a few occassions it appeared that eating places were not where the guide book said they would be or they were closed when the guide said they would be open for business.
