This book provides everything necessary to enjoy a well informed visit to the Latvian capital.

Full of pictures, maps, guided walks, background information and recommendations it fulfills all the requirements of a guide book.

It also includes a pull out map (which is not part of the book) allowing the visitor to best see the city and plan more easily their route.

Perhaps the only thing this book could benefit from would be a larger section on the Latvian language, although if you really want a phrase book these are readily available.

If you buy just one book for your Baltic trip, this is the one. It is well-written, chock full of practical information and historic background to make the most of your travels. There's no worry if you don't know the language or how to catch the bus in Tallinn; it helps you do it yourself.

The one minor irritation is that there was no reference to TrekBaltics, an Estonian adventure travel company that we found on our own. That was a great find.

All in all -- a terrific book, and the most updated one available today.

The one essential thing for a city guide is portability and this one is the right size for the pedestrian tourist. Unfortunately, my copy, ordered from the publishers, did not arrive by return of post so I had to tour Riga with a larger book. Reading this one on my return I found it an accurate and informative guide though it could have done better by including hotels a little farther from the centre. They are cheaper and the access to the centre by public transport is good. It also failed to describe the excellent food and beer at The Lido, another non-central facility.
