The simple concept of this journey was to walk from the hook of Holland to Istanbul following the two main arteries of Europe: the Rhine and the Danube. The book was written from pre-war notebooks so some of the language is slightly unfamiliar at first. Once you get over your modern cynicism the gentle pace and detailed descriptions will pull you through the slowly changing landscape of Europe. You will feel the cold of blizzards through dense woodlands and then warm up to drink schnapps in a Bavarian Inn. Despite the poetic prose and flawless rhythm the real strength of this book is the sheer scale and range of knowledge shown by PLF. I was never let down by his ceaseless curiosity, a curiosity which feeds off the assortment of characters he ... Read More:

Leigh Fermor's great classic is extraordinary. His language is immensely beautiful, but I believe that the secret to understand the book is that he is actually painting pictures with words. There are some great set pieces in this second volume such as the Easter ceremonies in Hungary, his unforgettable aristocratic hosts and the chateau life he began to lead after Munich while still camping out from time to time. His descriptions of those country houses, and their denizens, particularly once he crosses into Romania, are like small jewels.

The great glory of this book is the trip he makes in Transylvania: it shows a world which no longer exists (Romanian, Hungarians, Swabians etc all living together in one area) and makes one wish ... Read More:

The main city map was perfect, we ripped the cover off and took it everywhere with us. Simple to use and fairly concise in terms of the info about each entry. Nicely divided into sections for shops, food, highlights etc. Gave some nice ideas for walking tours. I personally would recommend this one over most others for its ease of use and simple entries.

One of the reasons I loved this book was that it covered many places I had visited or at least countries that I had visited and it evoked the feeling that was still there, leastways in the 1980's. For more discussion on this work and mostly 5 star ratings search the title for the penguin edition which also seems to still be available.

The author goes through a number of distressing ordeals before setting off on what must have been an epic quest for a rookie cyclist still raw from great grief. After all, this was hardly a slow pedal to the shops!
And it is the adventure which makes this story so interesting - the random characters and obscure places visited enroute.
This is not just a journey of the body, but also of the mind as the writer discovers the true secret of cycle touring, absorbing the countries around you and taking the time out to think and relax.
This two wheeled healing process is punctuated superbly with hilarious encounters with unlikely lodging offerers, wild loose shaggy bulls, rabid bike hungry dogs, drunken Swedish card schools and geriatric ... Read More:

To me these travel guides are the best you can get. It gets straight to the point, tells you enough history and the guide has a brillant, easy to use layout. I have a number of these for various cities and haven't been disappointed yet.

As most Lonely Planet guide books I have read, this has also been of great help to me. It really increased my joy of expectations. And they were fulfilled.
I love to really study my guide book weeks in advance of my departure. If I am going away on the spur of the moment and I do not have time for thorough study, I usually by another guide book, besides the Lonely Planet guide, for getting the quick overview and use the Lonely Planet guide for a reference book (looking-up things).
I only give it 4 stars as the map maybe could be a little bit better.

This guide starts with a very interesting history of the city. The information is given in a very detailed yet accesible fashion throughout the book. It is presented by dividing the city up into seven areas and it gives a complete overview of the history and sights of the areas.

It recommends some superb restaurants and hotels (though we had already booked when we bought the guide so i cannot comment on the hotels it recommends). It also gives suggested walks around the city and day trips out of the city complete with mini guides to such places as Haarlem and Utrecht.

It gives invaluable information on travel in and around, to and from amsterdam. And the maps are clear and very easy to follow.

Very nicely illustrated ... Read More:
