1.Playing the Moldovans at Tennis by: Tony Hawks
January 04, 2001
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Playing the Moldovans at Tennis
Off The Bookshelf's Price: £7.99
Prices subject to change.

Used Price: £0.01

Tony Hawks and his fellow comedian friend Arthur Smith are watching the world cup when Smith bets Hawks that he couldn't beat the entire Moldovan world football squad at tennis, hence the premise for this comic travelog. It contains a smattering of Hawks's usual wit and plays the Englishman abroad with aplomb. Some of the situations are fairly amusing, but it doesn't feel as though the author is laughing at the Moldovans, he's merely chuckling with them (if indeed they do crack a smile....)

Recommended if you want a fairly easy read, it's not laugh out loud funny, but I'm sure it will raise a wry grin.

Books : Romania and Moldova (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
This book is one of the best Tourist Guides I ever had in my hands. I bought this book two week before i went to Romania last year. There we made a two weeks tour by car trough Romania. Timisoara - Sibiu - Bucharest - Bacau - Putna ... everywhere was something to see. No matter where we have been. For every small region, this book had a lot of usefull and interessting tips about thinks to see and also about there history. I can really recommend this book to everybody who is traveling to Romania.
Today I order the book "Hungary" from Lonely Planet, because we are having our vacation there this year. I wasn't searching for another book. -> I was directlly searching for this book about Hungary from Lonely Planet because I had so very good experience ... Read More:

All I can say is that I'm glad this book has just been reprinted. I can only comment on the Moldova section as I've just returned from there, using - or at least trying to - this inaccurate, out of date, unhelpful guide. For example, this book says there are 11 trains daily to Odessa, Ukraine, from Kishenev in Moldova. There hasn't been a single train for 3 years. I hope the new edition improves on this HUGELY. And, if you're thinking of travelling across the Ukraine-Transdniestr-Moldova border, DO NOT DO IT. Even spending any time in Transdniestr is VERY difficult at this time (NOT as stated in this guide book) and you will get a lot of unwelcome attention from lawless police, border guards and army. Find another way across the border. Please. And Don't bother ... Read More:
