I bought this for my son's 6th birthday and if you ask him what his favourite present was he would say this book! He/We have made a telescope, treasure chest, swords, pirate hat... and you don't need much in the way of art supplies to do it. Cardboard (from the recycling), glue, scissors and perhaps paint if you want to go down that route (we did). Book contains lots of pirate stickers for you to stick onto your creations to help them look the part. The instructions are very step by step too (I did struggle a bit with the telescope though). Excellent book for your budding pirate.

I am a teacher who has long been looking for a simplified version of the Egyptian myths. This book fits the bill exactly! I loved the questions and extra info at the end of each story and the answers at the back!! This is a great book for me to use with the children or for Key Stage 2 children to read by themselves. Little touches, such as the hieroglyphic name plate and the animated scribe, make it very child-friendly. Truly excellent value for money!!

The Battle of Stalingrad was, without doubt, one of the most gruesome episodes of WWII. Beevor manages to write not just a well-researched history of the battle, he also manages to draw the reader into its horrors with his marvellous prose and eye-witness accounts. This is a history that comes alive from the pages to leave an indelible sense of anger, horror and, to some extent, shame in the reader's mind - are we really capable of acts such as this? Could we have survived?

Even someone for whom WWII is a remote historical curiosity would be hard-pressed to deny this account's power and immediacy. The book reads like a novel but, unlike a novel, what we're reading is true; it happened; this is what mankind is capable of. Too many ... Read More:

This is an excellent history book, the sort I wish I'd had 30 years ago. Not just dates and battles and important people, but information on how the ordinary people lived, what they wore, what work they did, how events affected them, the builings...... Lots of very innformative pictures. And lots of 'asides' on historical figures whom I'd heard of, but didn't know exactly why they were important, with just enough information on each for me to gauge whether to do further research. I've given copies of this book to three youngsters in the target age group and their parents have all reported back that their offspring loved the book.

A wonderful outstretched hand as an offer of peace between our two countries. I bought WARGAME several years ago at Heathrow and was immediately captured by the gentleness and love in this book of Foreman's. Having often suffered for many years from the "image" of the brutish German that was persistently rendered in all comics and most other publications available to children, I was very moved to see that a British illustrator depicted the German boys and men playing football with their "Tommy"-counterparts looking just as normal and pleasant as the Britons. A subtle and important way to make peace in our wonderful, hopeful, interesting new United Europe.
Some time later I got to meet Mr. Foreman, and he lived up to the expectations formed by his book: a great ... Read More:

This is a very useful book which I purchased because I was teaching the QCA module in Year 2 which dealt with Famous events. it linked into work about our capital city and has a useful section about Samuel Pepys and his diary. A good sized book with excellent photos and nice, large print. Worth the money.

"World War II for Kids: A History with 21 Activities" really has three key components. First, there is a history of World War II from Hitler's rise to power in 1933 to the surrender of the Japanese in 1945. Second, Richard Panchyk provides excerpts from actual wartime letters written to and by troops on both sides along with personal anecdotes from people who lived through the war. Finally, there are 21 activities that can show young readers how it felt to live through World War II, both on the battlefield and on the Home Front.

Actually, the first function is the least impressive part of "World War II for Kids," although Panchyk provides a solid history of the war. It is just that the personal writings and recollections, along with the activities, are where ... Read More:
