Roberto Saviano is a 28 year old man, who grew up in Secondigliano, a rundown of 10,000 inhabitants on the fringe of Naples, of which 2468 residents are incarcerated for mafia and camorra related activities and the rest have simply been abandoned to their fate. It is also the trading centre through which about 80% of Europe's cocaine is filtered through, packaged, distributed, marketed, cut, and sold on. This is an unpalatable reality few outside of Italy understand, care about or are able to believe. And this little book has opened a floodgates, no less for the Italians who have always known the extent of the Camorra's corruption on all levels of italian and international society, but who, out of fear, or inability to get close, have not been ... Like I've said, a comeplling read about a fascinating character. I'd never even heard of the man before I read some excerpts form this book and I rushed out to find it right away. If you're into this type of book you'll love it, but I'd advise anyone to read it. Whether you agree with his chosen profession or not, you have to bow to the criminal genius that is/was Curtis Warren and this well written tale illustrates just how good at his 'job' Warren was, until he slipped up, that is! But I won't ruin it for you. Just buy this book, simple as. It's a must have, I can't recommend it highly enough. Hopefully, when Mr.Warren gets out of prison in a few years he might bless us with his own version of his astonishing life-story, but until then this will ... Read More:

Read quite a lot of these style of books and they all seem to have pretty much the same lines,ie us real gangsters,us real hard men and its more like an ego trip thing however this guy is slightly different in that hes actually educated but still lets himself down by making himself out to be the toughest man on the planet and as we all know most of these types only tell the story when they are winners never losers, however history usually tells the true story even great toughs like the late Lenny McLean & Roy Shaw were beaten by fairly average people so on that score the story i felt was more of the same,as for racism certainly never saw any of that maybe there were more white dealers than colours , but all in all if you like the hood element this ... This is a really interesting book on the crime scene based on true events from a "supergrass". A great author who tells the story of drugs and violence in a way that I could not put the book down. Not only a great read but an education in some of the biggest crimelords / drug dealers in the UK's past. Get it!

I Came across this story first as a side line in many Mafia/Mob based books and then the Movie. This book far outshines them all. It has to be one of the best, most truthful portrayals of the American Mafia I have come across. The book has the added advantage of being written by someone outside the mob going in. Pistone shares our values and curiosity for detail where it matters. This is no egotystical mob defector this guy is an ex FBI undercover officer. It covers 6 years of undercover work during the late 70s and early 80s infiltrating the Bonanno family amongst others. This book shines a light on the lesser, street mob characters but infinately more interesting such as Ben "Lefty" Ruggiero and Sonny Black. ITS A MUST READ for any Mafia fan.

The development of the mafia in Sicily over the last 150 years is described in detail in this absorbing book.
The challenge of writing about a secret, criminal fraternity is obvious. How can you be sure of the accuaracy of your sources and to what extent have popular perceptions of the Mafia been distorted by the media industry that has fuelled its reputation and its mystique? Dickie never fails to acknowledge the difficulty of such a task and never falls into the trap of allowing his writing to become melodramatic or unrealistic. This means that his tale has the air of authority of journalistic prose and brings to life the conditions in which the Mafia arose by focusing on the social and economic events that encouraged its development.
This means that the book is of ... Read More:

Really badly written - The authors attempts to "talk street" are just silly. Full of clichés and unnecessary glorification. His sycophantic approach to the murderer Ken Noye would be almost laughable if the subject matter was not so serious.
There are much better crime books out there.

Just read this and my God, what revelations - I have several times visited Vatican City and been over-awed by the worldly and awesome atmosphere of the place so it doesn't take too much of a leap of credibility to know that what Yallop is saying in this book is quite true.

The connections with the Mafiosi, bent bankers and the biggest bent banker (untrained as a REAL banker, but the REAL God's Banker) of them all, Archbishop Marcinkus, who, incidentally died in the USA in 2006 - apparently as a revered and saintly priest - Ha! Ha! is quite phenomenal. I well remember the revelations in the eighties about Roberto Calvi, et al and am not surprised ( but I AM saddened) by all the machinations perpetrated by the Instituto per le Opere di Religione
(IOR) under the ... Read More:
