For much of the last 139 years, Jacob Burckhardt's work has been dismissed as too "Nineteenth Century" for serious study: more literature than serious history. So much the pity. What Burckhardt left us in The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy is a magisterial, thematic, understanding of the Italian Renaissance that is far more 1990's in its observations and human understandings than its original 1860's. It is a shame that Burckhardt's famous pupil, Nietzsche, didn't learn a little more balance and discretion at his elder's feet. This book is a joy to read. this book is such an intresting read i would highly recomend this book to anyone who has fallen in love with florance or has an intrest in the history of the renaissance. Strathern wrights in such a way that you do not feel as if you are reading an history book, it is a wonderfull story about an amazing period in time. i am an art history student with prior knowlage of the medici but this book is perfectly writen for both readers with some knolage of the family and thoughs without. i would not recomend this book to people who are not intressted in the renaissance.

The whole style of Linda Murray is very professional and informative and this book "reads well" with good illustrations of which many are in colour.We would expect this, after reading her other books in this series, but her vocabulary is specialist, and non - specialist readers have to keep breaking off to find the meanings of her terms.A glossary would strenghten the appeal of this book enormously - even footnotes would help.I have had to depend on the glossaries in Paoletti & Radke as well as Frederick Hartt to grasp the meaning of words like "herm " and "pendentive" (from a long list) and I feel that these American volumes are more helpful in this aspect.
