Books : From Fatigued to Fantastic: A Clinically Proven Program to Regain Vibrant Health and Overcome Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia
If I have learned nothing else from my experiences with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, I have come to understand the need to educate myself about my health issues. Often health care professionals simply don't have the knowledge of how to help my symptoms. Unless they specialize in these conditions, they simply can't keep up with the bulk of current research. Therefore, the onus is on me, as someone dedicated to my good health, to be part of the solution.

For those individuals wanting to educate themselves on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, From Fatigued to Fantastic is a very good resource. It begins with those fundamental questions that we all ask. What are these conditions? What causes them? Why did I get ... Read More:

I found the first section helpful, applying for Graduate Entry by myself means I haven't been told some of the things that I'm sure those applying straight from college will have about personal statements etc.

The questions were however too few and disproportionately difficult; though I guess being overprepared is better than under. There were also 3 errors (that I picked up on; there may in fact be more) but they were quie obvious ones so don't really impede on your learning.

Worth the £10 I paid just to feel a bit more prepared but not great.

What can I say, I was a 30 a day man for 30 years read this book and have not touched a cig for 10 weeks now. I have the odd craving but they are easy to overcome. My advise is to buy it, read it and add a few years to your life.

This is an excellent book to make you realise how your feelings are determined by your thoughts, and how you can positively influence your mood by changing the way you think. Some self-help books don't deliver because they're too vague but this book is also very practical, with many useful exercises. It's no wonder that many people are so enthusiastic about CBT and talking about it as an alternative to medication. I do not suffer from depression and was always a fairly happy person but this book has taught me how to be happier still. I would also recommended Eckhart Tolle's the Power of Now for a slightly different perspective and Steve Taylor's Making Time Making Time: Why Time Seems to Pass at Different Speeds and How to Control It for an invesigation into ... This book is an excellent guide to the technique of mindfulness. The principles of mindfulness are essentially very simple but amazingly effective. It's something that we all forget to do, and this book serves as a powerful reminder to bring our attention away from our thoughts and into our experience. The authors are free of academic jargon and are clearly passionate and extremely knowledgeable about the benefits of mindfulness, and the book is clearly not just for people who might be suffering from depression. I recommend it highly along with Eckhart Tolle's the Power of Now, and Steve Taylor's Making Time Making Time: Why Time Seems to Pass at Different Speeds and How to Control It, which uses mindfulness as a way of living in the present and becoming free ... Have had every edition and I still carry a copy in my bag. Anyone doing acute takes who thinks they don't need to reflect on some aspects of some cases will come to grief. I am reassured when I see junior docs carrying a well worn copy.

Strength Training Anatomy is set out in a style that is very easy to read, each chapter detailing a new body part and within it a detailed list of some of the more popular exercises and how to perform them. By saying popular, I really mean the more traditional exercises using fixed resistance machines, dumbells and barbells. My POV is that it is very much old school - you can tell that by the illustrations of the guy in the 80's striped bodybuilding pants. If you are looking for educational material on functional strength and core strength which is very much in vogue and correctly so, then this book is not perhaps what you are looking for. Instead I would highly recommend this book as a text book and point of reference for all practitioners that prescribe exercise routines ... Read More:

I was lent this book by my CPN not long after I was first diagnosed with quite severe depression in August 2007 & it soon became something of a crutch for me - I had to order a copy for myself so her other patients could benefit from her copy. I agree that, initally at least, it probably wouldn't work on its own but in conjunction with therapy and/or medication it is a great book. It was good to read & think 'I know that feeling' - it made me feel like there was still some fine thread linking me to the world people around me inhabit.

In a strange way it helps that Paul Gilbert is a clinical psychologist who has himself suffered with depression; it means he writes in both a practical and informative style. The book is medical without being hard to follow ... Read More:

I've owned this book since my first year of nurse training in 1998. Ten years later and having been qualified for 7 years, it's still in regular use. I recently did my Acute Care Foundation Course for emergency nursing, and out it came yet again. It's easy to understand and logical. Each body system is covered separately, starting with the biology theory and moving on to talk about diseases which can affect that particular system. For who wants to learn about human biology who don't like jargon and want things explained to them in plain English, this book is essential.

I have found this book to be an extremely useful guide for a rapid and comprehensive review of clinical presentations often encountered in general practice.I believe it is also a very useful aid to help one prepare for the MRCGP examination.Highly recommended.
