"THE ROAD HOME", by Rose Tremain
I read this novel in two days.I simply couldn't leave it. I underlined sentences,words...Rose Tremain gives us the unforgettable portrait of Lev, an immigrant from somewhere in east Europe who arrives in London thinking that most English people look something like Alec Guinness in "Bridge on the River Kwai"...It is a portrait completely different from the stereotypes of immigrants we find in most books dealing with this subject. It is utterly moving, funny, extremely well written --a joy for all readers (I hope...)

Well I'm coming at this from he opposite direction from Emma (above), but I agree with her assessment of the book.

As a 50-something runner and lover of Murakami's novels I found this fascinating - read it in one sitting (well, lying - it was an overnight hospital stay).

Recmmended for runners and couch potatoes alike.

This graphic novel has been given a massive amount of praise and to be honest, I'm not sure why. Perhaps because it's Alan Moore, perhaps because it is Batman vs Joker, perhaps because it has a Joker origin. I'm not sure.

I read it in one sitting, it's a very short and at £10 is a bit expensive. As it's so short there's not really a story. None at all. Batman turns up at the begining and the end, the middle is mainly flashbacks to the Joker origin. Which is campy and somewhat uninteresting.

The end is somewhat ambiguous following on the unexplored idea of should Batman kill the joker and why.

Really, the problem is not bad writing, just that it's too short and doesn't really explore the relationship at all. ... Read More:

This book swiftly draws the reader in to a world of tragedy, coincidence and mystery, described with humour and some sympathy. The story races along, the telling of it embellished with clever and at times unexpected use of language. But I read Kate Atkinson books at least twice - once for the plot and the second time to savour her writing. With one exception, the characters are well-drawn, if not rounded. The character of Louise Monroe figures large in this novel and inhabits an unsatisfying corner of the narrative. In some instances she is as real as your best friend; in others she is like an avenging but powerless angel or devil, and carries little credibility. Notwithstanding the enigma of Louise, this is a cracking book.

Ian Fleming's last James Bond adventure - a collection of short stories including Octopussy and The Living Daylights - was published posthumously in 1967.

That wasn't the end of 007's adventures in print. Kingsley Amis wrote a well received sequel in 1967 - `Colonel Sun' - and in 1981, Glidrose Publications hired thriller-writer John Gardner to reinvent Bond for the modern era.

What followed were 14 increasingly dreary and unbelievable books which saw an aging Bond gamely struggle through a litany of dumb adventures (the highlight being the rescue of Margaret Thatcher from a hijacked aircraft carrier in 1989's Win, Lose or Die.)

American thriller author Raymond Bensen was hired in 1996 to continue Gardner's legacy ... Read More:

Notes From An Exhibition synopsis from Amazon:

Renowned Canadian artist Rachel Kelly -- now of Penzance -- has buried her past and married a gentle and loving Cornish man. Her life has been a sacrifice to both her extraordinary art and her debilitating manic depression. When troubled artist Rachel Kelly dies painting obsessively in her attic studio in Penzance, her saintly husband and adult children have more than the usual mess to clear up. She leaves behind an extraordinary and acclaimed body of work -- but she also leaves a legacy of secrets and emotional damage it will take months to unravel. It sounds paradoxical to say that I didn't like the book or Mike Engleby, its central character, yet I enjoyed reading it to the extent that I didn't want to put it down. `Engleby' is disturbing and thought provoking, a brilliant depiction of a societal misfit abused by his father and emotionally neglected by his mother. Outstandingly intelligent, he obtains a scholarship to a second-rate public school where his classmates ostracise him, and thence to Cambridge.

The story is told as a journal, a one-sided account from the warped perspective of a sick mind. In many ways Engleby seems immune to the opinions of others, although he ponders the exclamation mark when he sees himself referred to as Mike(!) in the diary of Jennifer Arkland, the fellow student ... My first foray into Marian Keyes and I really enjoyed it. 4 quite different women and their connection to one 'charming' man and how their lives have been influenced - sometimes quite disasterously - by the connection. Not what I was expecting from chick lit ie quite hard hitting in places, plot not comletely predicatable, created a lot of empathy for the characters. I agree with others that the voice of Lola got on my nerves a bit - not really sure what she was trying to achieve here but this didn't really detract from the enjoyment as the story was gripping enough to keep me reading for longs stretches and so I got into the swing of 'Lola speak'. Would recommend for a beach read.

I am immensely puzzled by McCarthy's fame. I keep thinking I should love his books, but I just don't. People I admire and whose opinions I trust urge his books on me and I conclude that these people must be nuts. I managed to read All the Pretty Horses. Goodness, what a waste of time. I read about ten pages of No COuntry for Old Men, hoping desperately that it would grip me. No luck.

So, when I read the first few pages of The Road and instantly felt the kind of exhilaration I wanted to get from his other books, I bought it. Should have saved some cash and visited the local library. Once you get the gist of the narrative framework (post-apocalyptic, father and son trying to reach safety, bad guys everywhere), that's it. It is left to Mr. McCarthy to fill in the graphic ... Read More:
