this is the first bond book ive read, i really enjoyed the storyline it starts off slow but soon picks up. fast and pulsating its hard 2 put down, its more like the old bond films which i like the storyline is very good. the book concentrates on the story being in the middle east and france and on 1 villian j.gorner with a dodgy monkey hand and his sidekick chagrin, who bond and scarlett try 2 stop an evil plot 2 blame the british 4 a near disaster. bond must b pissed in this book he drinks more booze than an alcoholic, the only thing i didn't like is all the dodgy french words with bonds time in paris. any 1 who reads this book will find a good read not a bad debut by sebastian faluks.

This is a book that will make you think (a lot) and will successfully draw you back into the 70s. Written as a diary entry, this is a very humourous, although in an ironic, pessimistic sort of way, and dark novel. The story of Michael Engleby - a boy from Reading trying to fit in among his peers at Cambridge University, is ultimately one of the best books I've read this year, with an extraordinary twist and a cliff-hanger ending.

Having just finished this in 2 days and then reading the mixed reviews, I felt compelled to stick my own oar into the debate.

Overall it is brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Set in a post apocalyptic world, it's meant to be depressing. The landscape is grey throughout and there is very little to take joy in. The descriptive passages are very repetitive and I found myself skipping forward at times barely reading sentences. So far so bad.

The writing style is absolutely infuriating. Part sentences. (Just like that one.) Many times I had to rewind to ascertain who was speaking in the passages of text. After a while I did get attuned to the style of writing and it didn't hinder my overall enjoyment of the book. But it was ... Read More:

Dont know if I missed something here, but found it very hard going, not at all what I expected. Basically the story of Florence and Edwards wedding night, with lots of flashbacks. Not for me, I was really disappointed.Very slow. Caz

Sebastian Faulks' best book by far, moves from the pre-war period through the first world war to connect with contemporary times, through a woman searching for her family history. The description of trench scenes and warfare evokes my frustration with the pointlessness of the slaughter, in stark comparison with the humour in the descriptions of pre-war France. This is a wonderfully vivid book, one of the few that made me want to laugh out loud or cry as I turned the pages.

It's a good book, easy to read, informative and amusing. In fact, it's so informative that one is tempted to learn parts of it as ammunition for showing off how impressively clever you are to your friends; dismissing common knowledge as fiction is a satisfying thing to do. That is, until you come across something that the book claims to be true which you know in fact to be false (or more likely, not the entire truth). And by "know" I mean parts that cross over with my degree and which I have studied actual research journals on. Once I realised that the book takes liberties for the sake of sounding a bit impressive and sensational, I lost faith in pretty much everything else it claimed to be true. I'm sure alot of it is genuine, but how do you know which bits? And ... Read More:

A friend recommended The Alchemist to me a few years ago, and I've only now got around to reading it.

Looking at the reviews on this site, it seems a lot of people are critical of the simple style of writing, and the repetitive structure. Personally, I liked the simple, poetic style of writing. I'm not religious, and approach life from a scientific perspective, but I didn't mind the supernatural elements of the plot- they weren't the key message.

Coelho's message in this book is nothing new- to follow your dreams and to be awake to the possibilities within yourself, but he illustrates it poetically, and focuses on details of the plot that often are overlooked. Often he seems to interpret events in a postive way- something I found life-affirming ... Read More:

8.The Rain Before It Falls by: Jonathan Coe

A real change of direction for Jonathan Coe, and it doesn't really come off. Though I found it enjoyable enough, I expected something better, something with more to say, given Coe's previous novels, particularly the classic What a carve Up (which those new to Coe should read before giving up on him).

As with rather too many books today, a moderately interesting story is spoiled by the insistence on telling it in a self-imposed arty style. The device here is to tell the tale based on a series of photographs, and after the first few you feel like skipping those pages and getting to the point - something it takes Coe ages to do! Much of it reads like a series of creative writing exercises given to a less than talented class.

The plot is the sort of family ... Read More:

Interweaving the lives of two families with a celibate monk and their arch-enemies, this tale brings to life adventure, conquest and power-lust in the twelfth century. Against the backdrop of cathedral building, all human emotions are exposed in the ruthless villains and (mostly) virtuous heroes. A classic tale of good and evil that captivates from the start - I couldn't put the book down.

Loved this book and had difficulty putting it down until I'd finished it. You definitely need to read Chocolat first in order to set the scene for this sequel.

Loved to hate the character of Zozie, who I'd expect to be the star character if the book is made into a film. Bit disappointed in the "wimpiness" of Vianne (the main character from Chocolat) but, for me, that made this book refreshingly different and I'd say it was a brave move by the author.

Loved the way the narrative switched from one character to another too.
