An exhaustively researched but generally very readable biography. In a few places (esp. the chapters on image, art and costume) the level of detail does get a little too much, but this is a testament to the author's endeavours. It is difficult to see how this can be bettered as a biography of this subject, absent the discovery of some significant new primary source.

This is not the kind of history that I was expecting - highly populist, focussed more heavily on Elizabeth as a person than on the politics and her decisions as a Queen. Beware.

Ingrid Seward is one of the most famous royal biographer. All her books are written with deep inside, understanding, passion and loyalty. She understands the ins and outs of royal life and is able to transmit this to her readers.

This book is no exception from this rule. So one learns and awful lot about the two princes and of course of the whole Royal Family. Even tough the princes are often labelled as "Diana's boys" they are very much as well "Windsor boys". She makes that cristal clear. I believe she is right about this. The controversy of the War of the Wales play into the whole biography, especially in the first years of the lives of the two princes. And there is much to think about what they had to endure. It seems to me that Ingrid Seward is less ... Read More:

I have just finished a book on Princess Margaret, and was told that accomplished author Anne de Courcy had written an authorized biography about Antony Armstrong-Jones,also known as Lord Snowdon.
The book was written with his approval and full support, and he asked his many friends and acquaintances to make themselves available to Ms deCourcy
should she wish to interview them.
And it is a detailed, warts and all account of Snowdons life and many loves.
Tony's mother was an English Jewess, his father a Welshman. They divorced when he was just a boy. His mother was vain, unreasonable, demanding and self centred. She reminded me very much of the actor Peter Lawford's mother.
His father, a barrister was not a constant figure in his son's life ... Read More:

This is the first of Antonia Fraser's historical biographies that I have read and on the strength of it I have already bought her biography on Henry the Eighth and his six wives and I intend to buy more. I absolutely adored the way this book was written, she sets the scene in such a realistic way that you can almost hear the baying of the angry mobs and smell the stench of the prison where Marie spends the last of her days.

Some historical biographies get too bogged down in historical data, quoting endless facts, dates and figures until you feel your brain can hold no more. This is the perfect biography in that it gives you the important information you need in order to understand the causes and effects of the revolution, yet the book never forgets the main subject ... A fascinating book that deals with each of his children in turn. It gives the reader an insight into why they acted as they did. It proves that really all four of them were neglected lonely people. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone interested in this period.

I thought this book would be an interesting history, but it turned into a real page turner, even though I knew the ending. The best book I have read on the Tudors, bringing the complex political issues into an easily understandably context with dumbing down the history. If you want an exciting overview of this period read it and enjoy.

In terms of reliability as a historical source Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain ranges from just plausible to down right nonsensical but you can't take away the sheer brilliance of literary construct on the part of Geoffrey of Monmouth. The farther of Arthurian romance does not fail to entertain.

Only two criticisms which makes it a 4 instead of a 5 star read, Monmouth crams around 2000 years of history into about 250 pages, as such sometimes the book moves at such a pace he just lists kings without passing any comment on them making them instantly forgettable. The only chapter I didn't enjoy was the one on Merlin, I just find it too far out there, maybe it is because I'm a philistine but it just reads like the ramblings of a lunatic.

Some of the most fascinating characters in history hail from the murkier depths of times lacking much documentary sources. Perhaps their interest comes from this patchwork of conflicting sources, or perhaps the temporal distance lends enchantment. It also presents a problem for the biographer, in that the lack of sources makes it difficult to write authoritatively on the subject. If the subject is a mystery then the book can't be much more than conjectures joined up with speculation.

Eleanor of Aquitaine occupies an odd place in such a time. As a ruler and heiress in her own right, and as queen of France and later England, her life is much more richly documented than most of her contemporaries. Her movements, lodgings, nutrition and clothing can be conjured from the surviving accounts. ... Read More:
