A great work, but 'Survival in Auschwitz' is just the American name for 'If This Is A Man', which is published in Britain together with 'The Truce'. Amazon has it, it's better value as well as a better title.

This book is so full of life I half expect to find it dancing around on my bookshelf. And it has so many merits that it is difficult to know where to start: essentially it is an account of a vanished period in time, and of different places, and a man who squeezed five times as much into his life as any normal human being. If only half the stories in it are a quarter true - well, the mind boggles: nuns, secret assignations, midnight gardens, transvestites. Quite apart from the astonishing adventures, it's a moving and sad account with a strong underpinning of philosophy. And in its way it's a morality story: sleeping with lots of women (and some men) really doesn't necessarily lead to happiness. If you haven't tried Casanova before this lively edition ... Read More:

4.The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci by: Jonathan D. Spence
June 26, 1993
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci
Jonathan Spence's approach here is so effortlessly engaging, so like a work of historically informed fiction, that you can easily lose sight of just how responsible and convincing it is at the same time. Framing the book with Ricci's own mnemonic imagery gives Spence a complex but perfectly coherent lens through which to write. Spence deftly allows Ricci's own images to define the scope of the narrative as well, so he isn't burdened with scholarly asides attempting to fill in the gaps with a general history.

This is a book of simple genius. I've reviewed several books on Amazon, and never given a five star rating before. This wonderful book rates a five.

5.Mussolini by: R.J.B. Bosworth

Mussolini by R.J.B. Bosworth is an interesting book which offers some insights into the rise and fall of Mussolini. It shows that Mussolini was a terrible man but not as bad as some of his contemporaries and perhaps could if the Second World War had not happened could have perhaps ended up like Franco in Spain. It also dispels the view that he was an incompetent figure of ridicule by showing that while not being an intellectual he was far from a buffoon. However, the book suffers from a lack of structure in places, the mention of figures and events with no explanation as to who they were or why they occured and in places a rather pretentious tone. All in all a good book but rather wordy and a little hard-going.

Every fantastic location and creature and event described and experienced by the Polo family really existed. And yet the world still doubts the authenticity of this 13th century trader's experiences.
I have seen many of these locations and cultures for myself, some of which have hardly changed, and I continue to be amazed by the detail of his descriptions.

I bought this on the basis of the promise of new insights into the character and history of the much-reviled Lucrezia Borgia. Whether or not the re-writing of the popular stories about her actually appears in the book I really couldn't tell you, because after three or four chapters of leaden, unengaging prose I put it down and haven't picked it up again. You'd think it would be difficult to make one of the livelier women of one of the livelier periods of history dull, but after finding myself propping my eyelids open with matchsticks and struggling to reach the end of the page I realised that perhaps this book's most remarkable achievement was just that.
There are other books about the period - I bought Mary Hollingsworth's "The Cardinal's Hat" about ... Read More:

Anyone who enjoyed Evelyn Waugh's Scoop will be delighted by William Deedes' real life account of war correspondence in 1930s Abyssinia. Many of the journalists and officials turn out to be even more amusing and outlandish than Waugh made their fictional counterparts. The complex character of Waugh is also given honest treatment through Deedes' eyes, with as much admiration as criticism offered. It's also a nostalgic journey to a now long-past era, with our world of instant global communication and no more expensive, unreliable telegraphing, let alone cleft sticks. Deedes' account and Waugh's novel share common ground in their record of the tragedy as well as the bathos of war. A relatively quick read, but an excellent one.

Having read several books on Padre Pio I wish I had read this one first! The author manages to combine everything I have learned from several books into this one book with a style that made me read it from cover to cover!! After reading this you will definitely feel closer to knowing Padre Pio himself.

Many people will have been familiar with Alan Whicker from his decades of jet-setting, globe-trotting Whicker's World programmes; entertainingly, wittily and educationally bringing the world of travel into our homes on TV for British and other audiences.

When, after an absence that's been far too long, he reappeared on our screens again recently, to present a two-part documentary of his own experiences in Italy during the Second World War, many were happily surprised to see him still alive and going strong. And more importantly, we were treated to a sublime piece of television from this master of presentation and narration. The book is even better, because it provides more anecdotes and background on the campaign, and yet is still written in that ... Read More:
