"From the devil they came. To the devil they shall return." Abbé Bernard of Clairvaux (later Saint Bernard) pronounced that uncharitable verdict on the Angevin line. Legend has Bernard voicing his opinion after taking one look at the infant Henry of Anjou, child of Geoffrey, Count of Anjou and his consort, the Empress Matilda.

Nothing deterred, the infant Henry grew to inherit Anjou, as its count (1151). Then came his conquests by might or marriage: Normandy, Aquitaine and Poitou, before claiming England as King Henry II (1154-1189). After 1154, Henry II and his consort, Eleanor of Aquitaine, ruled a swathe of land stretching from the Scottish border to the Pyrenees, the Angevin Empire.

Perhaps Abbé Bernard was ... Read More:

Gwyn has undertaken the monumental task of revising out opinions of one of the most controversial and often misunderstood characters in English history. On the whole his re-anaylsis is a sucessful, scholarly and persuasive affair, featuring some excellent insight into Wolsey's relationship with the nobility and Henry himself, challenging the faction driven interpretaion currently fashionable with the likes of David Starkey. Having said that one does get the feeling that Gwyn is often so anxious to see Wolsey in the most positive of lights that his interpretation seems somewhat blinkered and onesided, the most obvious example of which is the chapter on the Amicable Grant. However, overall the work represents a valuable and often courageous reinterpretation ... Read More:

This is a useful book if you already have a basic knowledge of the period. Haigh writes from the revisionist view point and has written a book as far from the 'Good Queen Bess' outlook as possible. Not all of what he says is complimentary but it is an interesting insight into Elizabeth. This book is good if you want to have your views on Elizabeth challenged. Well worth reading.

There is a certain fascination with the larger than life (and towards the end of his life, grotesque) figure of Henry VIII. Of all of the Kings of England/Britain he is almost certainly the most recognisable. And the Tudor era certainly seems to be one which fascinates on television lately. This book, however, was supposed to be about, not King Henry, but his wives. Although they are all here, along with their life stories (to a greater or lesser extent - for some their lives before becoming Queen seem to be shrouded in mystery) the figure of Henry dominates the book, very much as he must have dominated these women in life.

The most interesting stories are that of Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. Here the stories are most dramatic, and therefore ... Read More:

7.Elizabeth the Queen by: Alison Weir

Books : Elizabeth the Queen
I was totally hooked on this book right from the start, although I usually read historical novels rather than non-fiction. It is so well written and descriptive that I felt I was an eye-witness at the Tudor court. If only school history lessons had been so interesting!

8.Henry VIII (Yale English Monarchs) by: J.J. Scarisbrick
April 02, 1997
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Henry VIII (Yale English Monarchs)
It has been a while since I read this book, but this is by far the most authoritative and scholarly account of Henry VIII. It has been around a while but it remains the standard biography of the king. Scarisbrick knows his man, and while being scholarly, writes in a way which makes this work accessible to academia and layperson alike.

Scarisbrick takes the reader through a thorough exploration of the primary sources and gives us Henry's true role in the momentous events of his reign:- the divorce, break with Rome, establishment of the Church of England and the growing power of parliament (thanks to Henry's use of it to achieve his ends). Despite his break from the Pope, Scarisbrick shows Henry to be a typical ruler of the period, and basically a conservative ... Read More:

This is a good, solid and scholarly account of England's penultimate Anglo-Saxon king - and the last of the line of Alfred the Great to be king. Frank Barlow is clearly an authority on the king and on the period in general.

Originally published in 1970, this is a reissue of the original, with new material and an updated bibliography (of primary and secondary sources). The author has also taken the opportunity, in the new introduction, to take stock of new research and publications that have appered since then, including the re-editing of key primary sources for the reign, such as the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Orderic Vitalis's Historia Ecclesiastica. The book also comes with black and white plates illustrative of the reign, maps, genealogical tables and appendices ... Read More:

Houston has produced an excellent book that provides a broad overview of the interesting and controversial period of James's reign. Did he sow the seeds of Parliamentary rebellion, or was he an enlightened monarch who passed on a sound legacy to Charles? Houston deals with both sides of the argument with great clarity and precision. Worthy reading for AS-Level students, and anyone interested in James I generally
