What would you do if your government made a law that was completely immoral? It required you to act in an immoral way? This is not just a theoretical question, it has happened - consider Nazi Germany. So what would you do? Follow the law because it is what the law says and as citizens we are under a duty to follow the law? Refuse to follow the law because it is immoral (and risk prison/execution)? What if everybody refused to follow laws they didn't like? Wouldn't that result in anarchy? Would anarchy be so much better or maybe it would be even worse? Maybe if the law was immoral enough you would start a revoltion?
If you think about questions like this, Hobbes' Leviathan is the beginning of the modern consideration of this question. You ... Read More:

lent this book to my daughter before I read it by which time I had seen the film. The film was moving and believeable - up to a point. Why his parents took so little interest in Bruno's coming and goings and why the maid takes little interest in his whereabouts is a plot device. Obviously the subject matter is harrowing and I cried at the film but not when reading the book which I found a bit of a letdown. Very simply written and perhaps more suitable for younger readers.

An amazing book, i always wanted to know about the Russian revolution and its cause and effects, Mr Figes not only delivers but makes all the key people involved come alive, i really felt for the peasant farmer trying to reform the agriculture of his village for the greater good.
The title is the most accurate and precise i have known for a book.

I am from Croatia, a republic of former Yugoslavia. I was engaged in a struggle for a democracy against communist regime in 1980s. The communist party argued that what we had as "socialism", and in particular "self-management" is the best form of democracy. In reality, we understand that it is not true.

David Held's book "Models of Democracy" was translated into Slovenian, one of south-Slavic languages, in a year of the fall of Berlin wall, Jun 1989. Few years later, it was published in Croatian also, with a special preface of D. Held personally.

The book was an excellent reference for all of us, who struggled for democracy, to understand what we are standing for. It is still important today, for we are still at the beginning of struggle ... Read More:

This book though not totally without merit could have been condensed into about two pages of useful information. The author has taken rather selective interpretations of history and in many areas his historical knowledge contains huge gaps. There are a few good points made though the amount of nonsense one has to trawl through to get to these points is enough to make one despair.

This book usually comes highly recommended. A 'classic' by a Nobel prize winner. Hayek was in fact an economist, but for the purposes of this book he assumed a political commentator's stance. His thesis is that Socialism is slavery, that the fascist Right and the fascist Left are two sides of the same coin, and that where there is dirty work to be done, dirty men will come forward to do it. Now you might say that's a no-brainer and wonder how it merits the 'classic' tag. Well you won't find the answer in the book. Overblown and in places pompous, you could be forgiven for thinking the author was being paid by the line. What is it with academics that one word won't do when four or five can be squeezed out instead? Perhaps they think verbosity succours the thesis. ... Read More:

I was a total beginner in terms of knowing about the Spanish Civil War and came across this little book in the local branch of Blackwells. As an introductory text, it is superb, the layout of each chapter indicating the main themes which may further be explored.
The author first gives an overview of the origins of the war: the dying colonialism of Spain's Imperial past, the consequent loss of status and role for the officer clas, the rise of a new industrial class, the increasing influence of the professions, all of which came to challenge the traditonal grip of the church and the big estate owners.
The author then situates these political and economic changes within the context of the wider European struggles following the first World War, particulary the establishment of the Soviet ... Read More:

As someone who studied the history of BSE in great detail I can assure you that the public 'scare' was based not on journalistic sensationalism but very hard science. The scientific evidence of the transmissibility of prion diseases across species barriers had been uniquivocally established by that time. That fact was carefully kept from the public in order to safeguard the beef industry. By whom? Senior officials responsible for public safety. Disinformation was advocated among senior officials with respect to the scientific evidence. It is amply documented. I know an organic butcher who pioneered the sale of organic meat many years ago before the supermarkets stocked it. During the BSE crisis he was visited by men in suits who gently advised him not to talk to his customers about it. "They'll soon forget ... Read More:
