I was looking forward to reading this book as I have served with a couple of lads from both 2 & 3 Para who fought in the Falklands and have worked with many other Paras in more recent years.
The book started off pretty dull about his life at school but soon got on track once he decided to join the Army, the story of life in the Army, his trip down south and what happened on his return was excellent, but then it went back to being dull again, why he chose to write about his trip to Belize is beyond me and didnt add anything to the book, I nearly stopped reading there, but then it picked up again at the end.
His attitude towards the rest of the Army is now very dated, and although there is still inter Regiment rivalry the whole ... Read More:

I don't normally do 5 stars so as I try to review this book, I will try to explain what makes it (in my eyes) so special.

Written in chronological order from before the start of the Falklands War this is a number of eye witness accounts so the perspective varies. This perspective is balanced with civilians and Argentines so all aspects of the conflict are presented.

I had a view of the Falklands war and specifically of the sinking of the Belgrano and I have to admit that I have changed my view upon reading this. I also learnt a great deal that I was not expecting to. Our politicians do not come out of this well (John Nott going to tell the Falkland Islanders that Britain would not come to their rescue if there was a problem ... Read More:

As a retired sailor from the US Navy who has served on destroyers during the time of this story I wondered what modern warfare at sea was really like, this book tells that story. I alway wanted to know how modern electronic and weapon systems would really fare during a prolong battle at sea. What is was like at sea with the onset of winter and the toll it takes on men and ships. This book takes you on that journey at sea and what it was like day to day on a destroyer fighting not only the elements but the enemy during the Falklands War. Inskip does a very good job with this book and telling the story of the only ship to survive an Exocet missile attack. A must have for any Naval bookshelf.

Having seen an advance copy of this book, I can only compliment Jon Cooksey on the accuracy of 99% of the content.

Reading some of the comments from the contributors, one can only imagine the horror of war and the terrible aftermath of what must have been a truly bloody battle.

I believe this will soon become one of the 'Must have' books covering the Falklands campaign and Mount Longdon in particular.

Outstanding...

This is an excellently written account of the under-publicised part played by RAF Harriers in the Falklands Campaign and is destined to be one of the definitive accounts of the Air War over the Falklands. It is a gripping read which describes vividly what it was like to fly a demanding aircraft in a demanding environment with none of the back-up which normally accompanied the Harrier Force in the field. It goes a long way to explain the great difficulties that had to be overcome in order to deliver air support to the land forces, and also why such things as re-attacks (strictly taboo by conventional wisdom) became a necessity. Only four stars, though, because the seething anger which the author felt (understandably perhaps) about the lack of organised tasking, ... Read More:

It is fitting that I finished this book on the anniversary of the day the battle started. It is a soldier's story, by a member of 2 Para's patrols platoon.

This book concentrates solely on Geddes' experience of 2 Para's battle at Goose Green in 1982. He commanded a patrols section.

The book concentrates on their actions - the voyage down, to their battle.

It is good to read of the bravery and compassion of 2 Para's soldiers, to rescue their wounded comrades and take out the Argentine bunkers. In particular Geddes feels that a corporal, Dave Abols, turned the action in 2 Para's favour by working round to the machine-gun position which killed Colonel H, standing up in a hail of fire and firing an anti-tank rocket into it.

As an Anglo-Argentine, I am always keen to understand why two staunch historical allies can be so at odds over two small islands. This book is probably the most balanced, educational and compelling read on this subject matter bar meeting with actual former soldiers from both sides. A must-read for anyone interested in or researching this war.

Having had little previous knowledge of the Falklands conflict I found this book an indispensible and easy to read guide, packed with information which was important in understanding why Britain and Argentina found themselves in this particular postition. Written powerfully, with a good degree of both skill and tension present, every action of the opposing sides is detailed, allowing the reader to follow closely one of the most interesting chapters in modern British history. An added bonus is the lack of historical bias, creating a clear and balanced account, distinct from many of the already published texts. A must-have for anyone interested in the Falklands War, with an excellent foreward by Simon Weston. Thoroughly enjoyable.

This is a compilation of compelling first-hand accounts of modern war by British soldiers, sailors and airmen involved in every incident of the Falklands conflict. The accounts are graffic, gripping and each one gives a secular viewpoint from the serviceman involved that gives a rough overview of a short, intense and brutal war. I was there in 1982...with this in mind I found the book informative and cast new light on areas of operations that I was not involved in.

The book highlights very well what we all now...that due to cut backs, political mis management and the tenuous logistical supply line that this conflict was a close run thing. In the main however it shows how, as always, the grit and determination of the British serviceman shines through no matter what ... Read More:
