I have no hesitation in giving Professor Grayling's book five stars.

It is an education and vigorous refresher for anyone like myself who recognises names like Spinoza, Locke, Voltaire, Milton, de Tocqueville, but has only a hazy understanding of what they stand for, and only a patchy idea of the significance of the Glorious English Revolution of 1688 and the American and French revolutions, but has now in these times an uneasy feeling that the ideas and principles underpinning free societies are neglected. In as little as three hundred well written pages he explains it all.

I will let others extol the virtues of the book and here draw attention to one serious flaw, or to be kind to the author, to draw attention to an issue ... Read More:

Ignore the other ignorant review. You simply can't not pay attention to Eric Hobsbawm - he puts paid to the notion that Marxism, idealism and the desire for a better society are simply the follies of youth. Anyone who can't understand how in a world of plenty, the tiny minority control the majority of the planet's resources, or that 30,000 children in Africa die or starvation every day, whilst Americans gorge themselves on hamburgers and Diet Coke, must pay attention to Marx and the other great revolutionary thinkers. The status quo cannot remain indefinitely.

I found this book invaluable in my studies of the enlightenment period, it features a broad range of essays and articles written by figures of interest from the 18th century enlightenment period. Including Descartes' 'I Think, Therefore I am...' John Locke's 'An essay concerning human understanding' Rousseau, Liebniz, Hume, Kant, Frederick the great and many many more...
I would strongly reccomend this book if you are studying this period in history, literature or just have an interest in this time.

J.M. Roberts, knows his subject, no doubt about that. He covers social, economic and cultural history over a period of 65 years. All important themes are covered, as you would expect from this type of book, such as the fall of the Austro-Hungarian empire, both World Wars, rise of Fascism, Russian revolution etc. It is easy to navigate the chapters and find areas you are looking for.
However, this book is written in a dull, heavy style. Roberts seems to delight in long winded prose when making a point, not something that lends itself to easy reading. Certainly it has it's uses as a text for the undergraduate historian but for the casual reader it may be just a little too much.

This is a great book, and is a great story.
It is strong most of the way through, until he gets a bit too religious and starts preaching his religious philiosphy.
It is extremely clear and easy to read, and the story keeps moving at a swift pace.
Give the intro a miss though, and dive straight into Olaudah's book.
