This is a stunning account of Belgium's King Leopold II's rape and plunder of the Congo. His agents and officials dealt misery and death to millions of Congolese and subjugated the unfortunate natives with ferocious brutality. Meanwhile the King of the Congo (and Belgium) got fat off the staggering profits of ivory and rubber. This greedy consuming devil was master of planting friendly stories in the western press, cajoling, bribing, threatening and shouting to the world how much good he was doing in the Congo. Fortunately you can't fool all the people all the time. A group of very brave men (some who paid with their lives) soon expose the truth and hellish conditions of the the Congolese. Under severe pressure Leopold gifts (sells) the Congo ... Read More:

This is a great book, and is a great story.
It is strong most of the way through, until he gets a bit too religious and starts preaching his religious philiosphy.
It is extremely clear and easy to read, and the story keeps moving at a swift pace.
Give the intro a miss though, and dive straight into Olaudah's book.

The abolitionist movement was, Hochschild says, "first sustained mass campaign anywhere on behalf of someone else's rights." in history, as such he considers it to be the ancestor of all modern mass campaigns. The story of the abolition campaign takes in the leading lights of the movement whose personalities and eccentricities are brought to life vividly, as well as the supporters throughout the country who individually had little influence ( most of them could not vote ) but whose mass boycotts of slave produced sugar sent a powerful signal as did the petitions on a scale that parliament had never witnessed before. The role of women was remarkable for the era.

The other side of the debate, the pro slavery forces, are also heard although ... Read More:

I'd just like to add that one of the main reasons for the air of authenticity that this book carries, is that it's a true story, compiled from interviews given by the real-life Clotee when she was an old, free, woman. This is not a work of fiction, and the dignity , courage and humility of Clotee shines through with every page.
Inspiring stuff.

I love Giles Milton's books. If you haven't read Nathaniel's Nutmeg or Samurai William, then do so.

I already knew a bit of this story - that Barbary corsairs raided the Cornish and Irish coasts in the seventeenth century for slaves, but I wasn't aware of the enormous scale of the Moroccan and Algerian white slave trade. Or that it continued up to the Congress of Vienna. And I had never heard of the dramatic incident that brought it to an end - a British fleet, massively armed thanks to Britain being in the first flush of the Industrial Revolution, pounding Algiers to rubble until the local sultan agreed to give up the trade.

And did you know that an abusive gesture used by Muslims to Christians was to raise the middle finger, to indicate ... Read More:

This book attempts to cover a vast range of aspects on the topic of the abolition of slavery in Britain. This is a plus in my opinion if treated as an introduction - it is easy to read, is not overly detailed but provides 20 facts per page. The difference in this book is the range of perspectives covered, from the British abolitionist and abstainers viewpoints to the Africans' own involvement in progressing abolition which is found in many modern accounts, to the politics of African abstainers then to continental and American positions on the topic even discussing pre-Transatlantic Slave Trade Africa. This frames continuous hints throughout that Europe was directly responsible for the relative poverty of Africa.

In a quasi-academic style, citing a few sources ... Read More:

Some time ago I heard William Hague lecture on Wilberforce. It was a pleasure to hear such a fine speaker so on top of his subject. The lecture lasted an hour but could have gone on for three as far as I was concerned, it was so interesting. The same is true of the book. It is written by a political enthusiast about a fellow politician, in my mind one of the greatest politicians we have ever had. He laid aside a beckoning life of luxury and ease to devote himself to the service of people. He inherited a fortune but spent most of it helping people less fortunate than himself.
Remembered for his fight against the slave trade, Wilberforce was also the founder of over 100 charities. A deeply committed Christian, he also worked tirelessly to reform the manners of England. True, he was ... Read More:

I Bought this book after seeking to know more about African history,
enslavement and the effects it had on society,
and it is a very sad but also inspiring story about a women who didn't have rights, was expected to please her master at any time he comanded,
and inspiring because her resistance to stand up to her right caused so much controversy and played a part in how the people around newsom farm viewed themselves and slavery.
A must read for all those interested in slavery history, the psychological effect of slavery and societys attitude to cilia's actions.
